Research led by Prof. Cao Jiannong on big data has addressed complex challenges in transportation and logistics through big data analytics. Data from diverse sources, which are often heterogeneous, uncertain, and high-dimensional in nature, are fused through cross-domain data representation learning and advanced matrix-based modelling to enable precise prediction and more informed decision-making.
The research outcomes have been successfully translated to support airport resource management such as baggage carousel allocation and aircraft stand management in Hong Kong, as well as intelligent demand dispatching systems for emerging on-demand services, resulting in improved service quality and operational efficiency.
The research team, in collaboration with a tech giant, have also developed a distributed data sharing platform using blockchain technology that ensures data authenticity and integrity without the need for intermediaries, in contrast to conventional approaches that rely on trusted third parties for data collection and exchange across diverse sources.
