Prof. ZHONG Kangping, Assistant Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), has been bestowed the First-Class Award in the Natural Science category of the Chinese Institute of Electronics Science and Technology Award 2025, in recognition of his outstanding achievements in optical information processing and transmission.
Led by Prof. ZHONG, the awarded project, “Optical information processing and transmission for ocean-oriented integrated sensing and communication,” was conducted in collaboration with Sun Yat-Sen University and Hangzhou Dianzi University.
This project aims to address the challenges in ocean-oriented integrated sensing and communications. It develops a low‑loss orbital angular momentum (OAM) multi‑core fiber, a broadband integrated OAM multiplexer, and a novel mode‑group control method that significantly reduces MIMO processing scale for ultra‑large‑capacity, ultra‑low‑energy space‑division multiplexing.
These research outputs have been successfully deployed in the South China Sea, realising integrated sensing and communication for ocean environments.
This achievement affirms the innovation and excellence of Prof. ZHONG’s research. It not only highlights PolyU’s excellence in cutting-edge research but also demonstrates Hong Kong’s growing role in contributing to global innovations.
