Awards and Achievements

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has received support for an innovative project on improving driving safety from the Transport Department’s Smart Traffic Fund. The awarded project aims to develop a novel emotion-aware navigation system that integrates driver emotions and route planning to improve travel efficiency and driving experience.

Led by Prof. Stephen Jia WANG, Professor of School of Design and Founding Director of the Research Centre for Future Caring Mobility at PolyU, the project titled “An Empathetic Navigation System Design Based on Drivers’ Emotion Inference from Traffic Contextual Data” has been granted HK$2.74 million from Smart Traffic Fund.

The project aims to develop a novel emotion-aware navigation system for drivers. Machine learning will be utilised to simulate traffic contexts and analyse their influence on drivers’ emotions. A novel route planning model will be deployed to identify a suitable route that strikes a balances between driving efficiency and drivers’ emotions, thereby enhancing driving safety.

Prof. Christina WONG, Director of Research and Innovation of PolyU, said, “PolyU is dedicated to making significant contributions to society through research achievements. We will continue to leverage our cross-disciplinary expertise to conduct innovative research in traffic and transportation, thereby creating a better living environment and fostering the development of smart mobility in Hong Kong.”
