Biosafety Level 2 Microbiology Laboratory
Location: U505, U506
Host Department: FSN
The Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) Microbiology Laboratory is a fully compliant containment facility designed and operated in strict accordance with biosafety guidelines. The laboratory features certified Class II Biosafety Cabinets (BSCs), dedicated autoclaves for biohazard waste sterilization, and restricted-access security systems. The facility is specialized for experimental manipulations of Risk Group 2 pathogens, with a primary focus on the isolation, phenotypic profiling, and genetic engineering of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), MRSA, and other opportunistic pathogens. By integrating robust engineering controls with rigorous personnel training, the laboratory ensures absolute containment of biological agents, protecting the laboratory personnel, the community, and the surrounding environment while enabling high-quality, reproducible scientific discoveries.
Centralised Animal Facility (Shenzhen)
Research Theme: Host-microbe interaction and in vivo microbiological research
Host Department: PolyU SZRI
Centralised Animal Facility (Shenzhen) is a specialised animal research platform established by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in PolyU SZRI. It is dedicated to supporting life science research for the PolyU main campus, its research institutes, and neighboring scientific organizations. The facility features Specific Pathogen-Free (SPF) animal laboratories, Animal Biosafety Level II (ABSL-II) laboratories, conventional animal laboratories, germ-free animal laboratories, and other specialized functional facilities.
Cryo-Electron Microscopy
Location: CF006
Host Department: ULS
The state-of-art ThermoFisherKrios G4 Cryo-Transmission Electron Microscope (Cryo-TEM) enables researchers to unravel protein structures at the molecular level reliably and efficiently. The Krios G4 is a highly stable 300 kV TEM platform with an industry-leading autoloader (i.e., a cryogenic sample manipulation robot), making it ideally suited for automated applications, such as single-particle analysis (SPA), cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) and micro-electron diffraction (microED). The GPU Cluster for Cryo-EM supports on-the-fly data processing and enables researchers to solve high-resolution structures in a shorter time.
