Summary

RILS co-organized the International Workshop on Smart Infrastructure Development Towards Smart Cities held online on 20 November 2021. The one-day workshop was jointly organized by the College of Engineering, Shantou University, and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Research Institute for Land and Space (RILS), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Over 200 researchers from various parts of the world participated in the Workshop online.

Dr Zhen-yu YIN, member of RILS, served as one of the Chairs of the Organizing Committee to host the Workshop. He also gave a presentation on the applications of optimization theories in geotechnical engineering for safer infrastructure construction, where models were selected based on laboratory or in-situ measurements. Prof. Xiaoli DING, Director of RILS, gave a presentation on elevated cities. The concept was demonstrated using cases of PolyU campus design and the Hung Hom Green Deck Project. Prof. Jian-hua YIN, member of RILS, presented his latest research on geotechnical structure monitoring and modelling and shared the results from monitoring some old stonewalls and trees in Hong Kong using PolyU optical fiber sensing technology developed by his research team.
