Before joining The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Dr Chen held the position of Chief Engineer at the multinational firm Alstom Power (now part of GE Energy). In this role, he led initiatives in power generation and rail infrastructure, where he and his team advanced both hardware and software solutions for monitoring and diagnosing generators and gas turbines. His contributions supported national energy demands and encouraged the expansion of renewable energy sources such as hydro, nuclear, wind, and solar power. Widely recognized in his field, Dr Chen also built a global network of experts focused on sustainable business practices and strengthening corporate sustainability efforts.

In 2024, following six months of negotiations, Dr Chen successfully established a partnership with the Technical University of Munich (TUM), which agreed to host the study tour for the MSc in Knowledge and Technology Management program.

Beginning in 2023, he leveraged his extensive professional network to initiate a dual degree MSc program between PolyU and Johns Hopkins University in the United States. The agreement was formally signed in October 2025, marking PolyU’s first dual degree collaboration with a leading U.S. university. At PolyU, Dr Chen is dedicated to creating a dynamic and intellectually stimulating learning environment. He goes beyond traditional teaching methods by encouraging critical thinking, challenging assumptions, and guiding students to evaluate evidence and synthesize insights for informed decision-making. His teaching areas include Technology Project Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and industry-focused strategies related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also actively fosters collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering and industry partners, ensuring that academic programs remain relevant and practically impactful.

Dr Chen also facilitated a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PolyU’s Faculty of Engineering (FENG) and Jinchuan Group—ranked 235th on the Fortune Global 500 in 2025, resulting in the creation of a dedicated research platform.

Looking ahead, Dr Chen aims to leverage his professional networks across ASEAN, Germany, and China to support the development of regional universities, promote stronger integration between academia and industry, and further advance internationalization and educational excellence in Hong Kong and beyond.
