PolyU and CUHK co-hosted the first Hybrid Botanical Symposium

Co-hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Chinese Medicine and Molecular Pharmacology (Incubation) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the State Key Laboratory of Research on Bioactivities and Clinical Applications of Medicinal Plants of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK),  “Botanical Symposium 2022: Exploring Innovative Approaches in Chinese Medicine, from Bench to Bedside” held successfully on 1 December 2022 via hybrid mode after two years’ postponement due to pandemic situation. The Symposium featured in-person and online keynotes as well as virtual poster presentations, which has brought scientists and researchers across different countries and regions to exchange views on a wide range of topics in herbal medicines including Chinese medicines, and natural products. It also explored the recent developments in the Greater Bay Area and the local institutes as well as regulatory approaches for safe and quality botanical preparations. The event was well attended with over one hundred participants and has stimulated insightful exchanges which has laid solid foundation for future collaborations.

DoRCMI are listed as Top 2 Percent Scientists Worldwide by Stanford University

PolyU has achieved an encouraging milestone of having more than 200 PolyU scholars ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in the newly released metrics compiled by Stanford University. The Director of Chinese Medicine Innovtion Centre- Prof. Wong Man-sau is ranked as the most top 2% scientists globally. This year’s data is based on the 1 September 2022 snapshot from Scopus, and it provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator.

DP and Provost speaks at 21st Century Chinese Medicine Internationalization Strategy Webinar by HKBU

Co-organised by the School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) of the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) and the Hong Kong Association for Integration of Chinese-Western Medicine (HKAIM), the webinar on “21st Century Chinese Medicine Internationalization Strategy” was successfully held on 21 August 2022 (Sunday). With a view to making Hong Kong the bridgehead for CM development, the webinar brought together heads of prestigious universities and authorities from around the world to offer their views on key problems and solutions so as to empower Hong Kong’s CM Development under the leadership of its new chief executive John Lee.   Prof. Wai Ping-kong Alexander, President and Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University, Prof. Lo Chung-mau, BBS, JP, Secretary for Health, HKSAR Government, Dr KO Wing Man, GBS, JP, Member, Executive Council, HKSAR Government, Dr LEONG Che Hung, GBM, GBSofficiated at the Opening Ceremony of the event.   The webinar fostered a dynamic dialogue between researchers and industry leaders with wide range of topics from international regulations to the national and local tertiary institutions’ strategic advances to foster TCM’s R&D and Industrial development. Under Session 2: Research & Development in Hong Kong Universities, Prof. Wong Wing-tak, Deputy President and Provost, was invited to present the university’s contributions to the modernization, industrialization and internationalization of Chinese Medicine via its education, interdisciplinary research, knowledge transfer, as well as establishment of laboratories and research institutes/centres on the topic of “Interdisciplinary Research Platform for Traditional Chinese Medicine in Greater Bay Area.” He also reported on PolyU’s action plans, milestones and targets for new drug discovery as well as the use of technology for improving efficiency and accuracy of CM diagnostics.   The webinar provides a constructive platform for academia and researchers to exchange insightful perspectives on the latest development, challenges and opportunities of Chinese Medicine. The event was well participated with over 300 TCM enthusiasts.

RCMI Launched First Research Seminar Series with Science Luminaries

RCMI Participated in PolyU Innotech Open Day 2022

With a view to showcasing PolyU’s endeavours in interdisciplinary research, innovation, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship to local, national and global audiences, PolyU organised the InnoTech Open Day on 16 July 2022 which offers a wide range of thrilling activities targeting innovation and technology (I&T) entrepreneurs, industry partners, researchers, young talents and students.   RCMI participated in the major highlights of the event: in the morning session, Dr Daniel Mok, Acting DoRCMI, graced the PAIR inauguration ceremony with RI/RC Directors under PAIR to mark the official launch of the largest interdisciplinary research in Hong Kong and the GBA;  In the afternoon session, in addition to exhibition booth showcasing the Centre’s research directions and funded projects, the Centre also joined hands with Research Institute for Future Food (RiFood) to host a parallel session themed “Health Food & Lifestyle Management” to enhance public’s understanding of promoting optimal health with TCM. RCMI is delighted to have Dr Jessie Lin, Research Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Science as the speaker.”, Dr Lin’s sharing, entitled “TCM Based Lifestyle Management for Improving Personal Health and Wellness, featured major TCM-based lifestyle management techniques, their therapeutic and antidepressant effects as well as related RCMI funded projects. PolyU collaborates with Increasepharm (HK) Limited for CM-based new drug development

PolyU received generous support of HK $10 million from Increasepharm (HK) Limited to establish the PolyU – Increasepharm Joint Research Laboratory for New Drug Development (“The Joint Laboratory”). A signing ceremony was held on 15 June 2022 via hybrid mode. During the ceremony, Prof. Zhang Baoxian, Chairman of Beijing Increasepharm Corporation Limited stated that The Joint Laboratory would capitalise on the opportunities brought by the country’s development, further extend the strategic partnership towards the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and conduct cutting-edge collaborative researches on developing nanomedicine and aerosolized medications for treating ocular diseases and osteoporosis. The Joint Laboratory is under the PolyU Research Centre for Chinese Medicine Innovation (RCMI). Prof. Wong Man-sau, Director of RCMI, expressed her gratitude to Prof. Zhang and said, “The establishment of The Joint Laboratory would strengthen the current collaborative researches on osteoporosis drug development. On one hand, it would leverage the advantages of Increasepharm in synthetic chemistry and industrialisation of new drugs, making the pathway for the industrialisation of PolyU’s pharmaceutical research results. The Joint Laboratory would be committed to developing a series of herbal-based small-molecule drug, including innovative drugs for treatment of dementia and prevention of cognitive decline; On the other hand, it would explore and deliver innovative drugs for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases with the Novel Drug Delivery System. The Joint Laboratory would not only complement each other’s research strengths and technological capabilities but also provide a training base to all parties concerned.”

PolyU scholar on relieving long COVID symptoms with TCM
