Biography

Dr Gigi Lui graduated from the Department of Building Services Engineering (now Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree in Building Services Engineering in 1995 and then obtained her Ph.D. degree from PolyU in 2001.  She was the only winner who won the David B. Gratz Scholarship, a competitive scholarship for graduate students enrolled in Fire Science or Fire Engineering Programs outside of the United States in 2000.  The scholarship was funded by the Fire Safety Educational Memorial Fund of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in U.S.A.  Dr. Lui joined the same department and university as a Demonstrator in 2001 after working in a Building Services Engineering Consultancy Firm as Undergraduate Trainee, Assistant Engineer and then Engineer for a total of 4 years.  She advanced through her career ladder to Lecturer in 2002 and then Assistant Professor in 2005.  She further became a Senior Teaching Fellow and a Senior Lecturer in September 2016 and January 2024 respectively. She has been the Master of Science in Fire and Safety Engineering programme leader since September 2017. 

 

For professional qualifications, Dr. Lui joined the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers in 1995 after BEng graduation and then became a Chartered Engineer in January 2008.  Besides, she joined NFPA, The Society of Fire Protection Engineers, The American Society of Safety Professionals and ASHRAE as members in 2001, 2003, 2003 and 2015 respectively.  Moreover, she also joined International Association for Fire Safety Science, U.K. in 2005 and became a life member in 2009.  She is a PolyU Student Branch Advisor of the ASHRAE Hong Kong Chapter and joined ASHARE since August 2015.  She serves as members in various Government Advisory Group and Committees.  She has been nominated by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers - Hong Kong Chapter as a representative to attend the Fire Safety Standard Advisory Group meetings as regular member since January 2016.  Besides the Appeal Tribunal Panel, Section 45 of the Buildings Ordinance (Cap. 123), she was appointed as a member of the Technical Committee on Building Safety and Health Requirements under the Buildings Ordinance for the term of office from 1 June 2018 to 31 May 2021.  Furthermore, she has accepted the invitation of the Fire Safety Command of the Fire Services Department to be a member of the Advisory Committee under Fire Safety (Buildings) Ordinance Cap 572 commencing since March 2019. 

 

The main areas of interest of Dr. Lui are on Building Safety and Resilience, Fire Safety Provisions, Fire Safety Management and Safety Engineering.  She has published 23 and 25 papers in referred journals and conferences respectively.  She further develops studies on Teaching and Learning, such as connecting rubrics and alternative assessment to enhance quality teaching.  She also has interest in supporting and promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education Policy for the young and new generations, and for betterment of Hong Kong, our country and the world.
