摘要

Reducing man-made CO2 emission is essential for keeping global temperature rise in check and ensuring Earth remains habitable by humans. Industrial activities contribute to nearly 20% of global CO2 emission. A large part of the industrial emissions is associated with metal production where oxide ores are reduced to metallic form by carbon or by carbon-based electricity. Most large-volume metal production routes such as iron, steel and aluminium are difficult to abate because of maturity of existing technologies and very few alternatives. Recycling of metals is an alternative. However, fundamental changes need to be made in alloy and component design to enable large scale use of recycled metal for high value use.

The talk will look at world-wide efforts being made to decarbonise metal production. New research and development work needed to ensure full use of recycling will also be discussed.
