Guest Speaker: Dr SUN Yong

Associate Professor, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China

Dr Sun obtained a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Queensland of Australia in 2017. After about 10 years of overseas study and work, he joined the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. He obtained Shenzhen high-level overseas talents (peacock) award, Chinese Dragon Plan Talent award, Shenzhen Science and Technology Innovation Commission appoint project evaluation experts, Shenzhen industry association of artificial intelligence experts, registered engineers in Australia, Chinese mechanical engineering society and plastic engineering branch, member of China metal association, Director of Mold and Forging Engineering Branch of Guangdong Mechanical Engineering Society, director of Shenzhen Longhua District Overseas Returnees Association.

Dr Sun’s current research interests include 5G and Artificial Intelligence Empowered intelligent manufacturing (5G collaborative control, machine learning, digital twin, flexible wearable sensing, cooperative robot or communion robot, etc.), intelligent sheet metal manufacturing principle and application (high-end equipment development), sheet metal forming technology of CAD/CAM/CAE theory and technology, industrial software development, new energy automobile lightweight technology, nondestructive testing measurement technology and application (e.g. residual stress), etc.

Abstract:

With the rapid development of metaverse and intelligent manufacturing, the requirement of digitization and IIoT of traditional manufacturing process is a challenging task for industries. Roll forming is a highly efficient sheet metal forming process which can widely be applied in a wide range of sectors, such as automotive (especially the new energy automotive), transportation, building other key sectors. However, this forming process is highly dependent on the experience of the on-site engineers. This seminar presents a highly intelligent, 5G empowered, flexible and self-adaption roll forming machine co-developed by University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and data M. The machine consists of several flexible moving units which controlled by codded stepper motors with a decent control system. Moreover, a high-performing artificial intelligence algorithm achieved from a systematic machine learning training process is integrated in this machine. The algorithm has already been used to predict and control the forming process to achieve a high-quality product. Data collection and transfer via 5G in a large scale and integrated sensors lead to an increased understanding of the process and provide the basis to develop self-optimizing roll forming machines, increasing the productivity, quality and predictability of the roll forming process. The technique is also beneficial to reduce common shape deviations, such as springback and endflare. The first high-strength steel key part (electrical battery pack) for new energy vehicles successfully manufactured with this new forming process.
