Our Experience Around The World

Lee Chun Yin
My exchange period in Beijing was a transformative experience that allowed me to grow academically, culturally, and personally. The academic exposure, cultural immersion, language acquisition, personal growth, and networking opportunities have broadened my horizons and shaped my global perspective. I am immensely grateful for the support and guidance provided by the exchange program, which made this experience unforgettable. I am confident that the lessons and memories from my time in Beijing will continue to influence my personal and professional journey in the years to come.

While studying and living in the UK, I have reflected on my career path and aspirations. As a mechanical engineering student, being a chartered engineer is my present ultimate goal. Apart from joining a scheme and work in Hong Kong for a chartership, obtain chartership in UK first and apply a transfer in Hong Kong is also another choice. In fact, quite a lot of professional engineers in Hong Kong own chartership from the UK. The UK takes a leading role in engineering and mechanical engineers are one of the most demanding occupations in the UK. Mechanical engineers in the UK are able to work for a wide variety of industries, such as transportation, energy, infrastructure and manufacturing, in which railway and energy are my interested field. Therefore, I may try to work and earn experience in the UK, strive for chartership and bring my knowledge and techniques back to my hometown.

Throughout this program, I had the opportunity to engage with individuals from diverse universities and nations, fostering valuable connections. This experience not only honed my interpersonal and communication abilities but also provided me with a fresh outlook on global communities.

In addition to the interpersonal growth, the academic subjects I studied at Hanyang University are poised to benefit my ongoing undergraduate education and future career endeavors. The knowledge acquired is expected to serve as a solid foundation for my academic pursuits and professional development in any chosen career path.

HTWG Konstanz University offered a unique learning environment that is different from learning environment in Hong Kong. German universities emphasize independent learning. critical thinking. For example, they only have one examination and no midterm test or any assignment. Although it may seem like there is no workload study, you need to have the discipline to review for final examination regularly. Also, German universities focus on critical thinking. Lectures were more interactive; teachers will encourage students to engage in discussions. There is no right and wrong in the classroom. Moreover, there is group discussion and group exercise in each lecture, I think it is a good leaning mode to study because students can learn knowledge from each other and meet new classmates. Sometimes, we will go to excursion together for learning. I think this is better than textbook-based learning because excursions can raise student interest and learning motivation.

With the practical knowledge provided in this university, I was able to know profoundly on what I needed to improve in order to pursue on my dream.

Although Product design was not my first priority as my future career, I still chose a course related to analysis and testing to learn more about this industry. In the Basic Fem course, I learnt the importance of material selection, shape of material. The slight changes of materials might cause deformation. As first, I thought I was able to finish the assignment easily as I thought I was quite familiar with the SolidWorks environment. However, it took me countless of sleepless nights for me to finish a single question. I realise I need more practice and research to be able to choose this as a future career path otherwise I would be too low productive, and no one would hire me. Although it was such a hectic course for me, I always feel accomplished when I finally finished one questions.

I'm delighted to have the opportunity to engage with fellow mechanical engineering students from diverse universities and countries. Establishing meaningful connections with friends from Kobe University, the University of Malaya, Beijing Institute of Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, the National University of Singapore and TUM has been enriching. Our regular meals provide a platform to exchange not only thoughts but also insights into our respective pursuits and aspirations within the field of engineering.

These interactions have significantly broadened my perspective on the mechanical industry, revealing potential I hadn't previously considered. Encouraged by the experiences shared by my friends, my next plan involves exploring opportunities for further studies or internships, aiming to immerse myself in the dynamic engineering landscapes of Singapore or Japan. This endeavor is fueled by a newfound enthusiasm and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the advancements in mechanical engineering.
