This programme is designed to provide students with a versatile and comprehensive education in the energy sector for sustainable development. The curriculum offers focused expertise in areas such as renewable energy technologies, advanced energy storage technologies, sustainable energy materials and devices, and the relationship between energy use and climate change. This programme will enhance students' professional and academic profiles in the emerging field of sustainable energy.

  • To provide advanced education and training for students who intent to upgrade their knowledge and to seek higher level career in the area of Energy Engineering
  • To enhance students’ professional competence and career competitiveness, and empower them to become future leaders driving innovation and sustainability in the energy sector
  • To equip students with solid understanding and practical mastery of the latest cutting-edge technologies in the area of sustainable energy
  • To cultivate students’ ability to effectively apply advanced knowledge and technical skills to solve practical challenges  

The programme offers flexible study modes to accommodate diverse student needs*. Local students may alternate between full-time and part-time study from semester to semester, allowing them to balance academic pursuits with professional commitments. Students can progress at their preferred pace while adhering to the programme's registration and assessment requirements.

*International students must maintain full-time status as per visa regulations.

  • A Bachelor's degree with Honours in a relevant branch of engineering, or a related science discipline;      
    OR
  • Relevant professional qualifications or equivalent

Consideration will also be given to candidates without Honours degrees who have other relevant qualifications and/or appropriate work experience.

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Please refer to the "Admission Requirements" section for details.

Individual cases will be considered on their own merit. Applicants may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate their language proficiency.

 

The programme provides the option for students to engage either in the full-time study mode (taking 9 credits or more per semester) or the part-time study mode (taking fewer than 9 credits per semester). In general, each subject requires a 3-hour class per week over a 13-week semester. Full-time students normally take 3 to 5 subjects in a semester, and part-time students usually take 2 subjects.

Students are required to complete the compulsory 1-credit subject “EEE5T03 Engineering Ethics and Academic Integrity” to satisfy the Academic Integrity and Ethics (AIE) requirement for graduation. No credit fee will be charged for this subject.

For the MSc in Sustainable Energy
Students must complete: 

  • Coursework Route: 10 taught subjects, including at least 6 Core Subjects and at least 2 Elective Subjects, OR
  • Dissertation Route: 7 taught subjects, including any 5 Core Subjects, and at least 1 Core/Elective Subject, and a Dissertation

For the PgD in Sustainable Energy
Students must complete: 

  • 6 taught subjects, including at least 3 Core Subjects and 1 Elective Subject

Departmental MSc Dissertation Scholarship 學系理學碩士論文獎學金

The MSc Dissertation Scholarship is offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, to encourage engineering research and award outstanding students of MSc in Sustainable Energy.

Amount of Scholarship

Each awardee will obtain a monthly stipend of around HK$5000 during second year study (about HK$60,000 in total).

Eligibility

Students studying in PolyU MSc in Sustainable Energy who fulfil the following criteria:

  1. Full-time MSc students only (both local and non-local);
  2. must complete 7 taught subjects, including any 5 Core Subjects, and at least 1 Core/Elective Subject, and a Dissertation;
  3. attain accumulative GPA for the first year not lower than 3.0
  4. duration of the study must be 2 years

Assessment Criteria

Assessment criteria may include, but not limited to, applicants’ academic achievements, professional qualifications attained, work experience and interview performance.

Application Procedures

The Department will send invitations to eligible students for interview around Sep/Oct in their second year of study. The offering of MSc dissertation scholarship is subject to funding and availability.
