General Statement of Health and Safety Policy

 

  

1.1

It is the policy of the University to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of its entire staff at work, of students in the course of study and of the general public using University premises.  The measures taken as part of this commitment are designed to achieve high health and safety standards over and above compliance with relevant statutory requirements.

 

1.2

More specifically, and in line with the general duties stated in the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, the University is to:

 

 

(a)

assess and control risk of University activitiesso as to provide and maintain plants and systems of work that are safe and without risks to health;

 

(b)

provide and maintain premises and working environments for all staff and students, including means of access to and egress from such places, that are safe and without risks to health;

 

(c)

communicate and consult with staff and students on health and safety issues in order to ensure the effectiveness of the health and safety policy;

 

(d)

provide such information, instruction, training and supervision as are necessary to ensure the health and safety of its staff and students; and

 

(e)

provide health and safety education to students so that they leave the University with a positive and responsible attitude towards such matters.

 

1.3

Heads of Departments/Units and responsible personnel are key action officers of the policy. They shall consult internal and/or external health and safety experts for advice and assistance when necessary.

 

1.4

It is also the policy of the University to require all staff and students, contractors and visitors to:

 

 

(a)

co-operate in achieving the aims and objectives of the health and safety policy; and

 

(b)

recognize their own individual duties and responsibilities to exercise care in relation to themselves and those affected by them.

 

1.5

Performance of the health and safety management systems developed under this policy will be evaluated regularly to identify opportunities for continual improvement.

 


 

General Statement of Environmental Policy  

 

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) pledges to provide a good environment for her staff and students, and to ensure that her activities are complying with relevant legal requirements and conducted in an environmentally responsible manner.

 

PolyU also cherishes campus sustainability. The guiding principles for achieving sustainable excellence and nurturing environmental awareness in future generations are set out in the Sustainability Policy.

 

Goals

 

The goals of this Environmental Policy are:

 

  1. to ensure that all activities undertaken in PolyU are complying with all relevant legal requirements on environmental protection and good practices recommended by governmental departments and authorities;

     

  2. to reduce and prevent the introduction of pollutants into the environment through the implementation of environmental management system; and

     

  3. to communicate and educate all stakeholders, including staff members and students, on legal compliance, environmental protection and pollution prevention issues.
