The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Sports Technology under the Faculty of Engineering is an interdisciplinary unit of the University dedicated to enhancing collaborative culture and promoting interdisciplinary research and teaching. By integrating technical innovation with human biology and sports science, the interdisciplinary domain of the Department drives advancements across the entire spectrum of human health and athletic performance – from health promotion, medical assessment, and surgical interventions to rehabilitation, sports performance, and injury prevention. Meeting these modern demands requires professionals who can bridge the gap between engineering technology, healthcare needs, and sports applications.

Currently, the Department is active in six thematic research areas, namely “Biomedical Imaging, Sensing, AI and Wearable Technology”, “Brain-Machine Interface and Neural Engineering”, “Molecular/Cellular Engineering and Biomaterials”, “Precision Diagnostics and Therapy”, “Prosthetics-Orthotics, Smart Ageing and Rehabilitation Engineering”, and “Sports Science and Technology”. The team has established substantial research and educational collaborations with local, Chinese Mainland, and overseas institutes. Several innovative technologies developed by the team have been successfully licensed to the industry for commercialisation.

We believe that with its inherent interdisciplinary nature, the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Sports Technology will continue to bridge innovation and technology with the evolving needs of the medical, healthcare, and sports sectors, equipping students with a solid foundation and practical skills to cater to the growing demands for high-quality healthcare services and advanced sports technology solutions.
