The GEO Semester and Summer Outbound Exchange Programmes offer students the opportunity to undertake overseas studies at partner institutions worldwide. Through academic learning, cultural exchange, and international exposure, students can expand their global outlook, develop intercultural competence, and enrich their university experience. Interested students may visit the website of Global Engagement Office (GEO) for details of available programmes and application arrangements.

  • Different host institutions may have their own CGPA, language proficiency, and other eligibility requirements for exchange applicants. Students are advised to review the requirements on the GEO website and refer to the websites and information provided by the respective partner institutions for the most up-to-date and accurate information.
  • Before accepting any exchange offer, students are responsible for carefully reviewing the programme requirements, available subjects, and the feasibility of their proposed study plan.
  • Students should also consult their Programme Leader, Academic Advisor, and Clinical Coordinator, as appropriate, to understand the potential impact on their study progression, credit transfer arrangements, and clinical placement schedule.

Since nursing students follow a comprehensive and structured study plan with clinical placements, students are strongly advised to plan their exchange well in advance. Before applying for a GEO Semester or Summer Exchange Programme, please consult your Programme Leader, Academic Advisor, and Clinical Coordinator. This will help you better understand the potential impact of the exchange on your future study plan and clinical placement arrangements, and set clear expectations before accepting an exchange offer.

To minimise disruption to academic studies and clinical placements, students are strongly encouraged to participate in GEO exchange programmes during the following year(s) of study:

Programme Code Semester Exchange Summer Exchange
53455 Year 2 - Semester 2
Year 3 - Semester 1
Year 1-4 Semester 3
53455AY
- Year 1 Semester 3
53482
Year 2 - Semester 2

  4. Review the credit transfer requirements and available funding opportunities for GEO Exchange Programmes. Compare the subjects offered by your preferred host institutions with PolyU subjects to ensure suitable courses are available for credit transfer.Student must withdraw from the exchange programme if credit transfer is not feasible. GEO reserves the right to retract your exchange offer if a credit transfer is unfeasible.
  5. Submit your application and supporting documents to GEO by the specified deadline.
  6. Attend the interview if you are shortlisted by GEO.
  7. Applications will be processed by GEO, and successful applicants will be notified individually.
  8. Follow the instructions provided by GEO upon receiving an offer. Please ensure that you complete all required procedures and submit all necessary documents by the specified deadlines to secure your exchange place.

Students should carefully assess whether they have sufficient financial resources to support their living expenses during the exchange period.

During the exchange, students will continue to pay PolyU tuition fees only and will not be required to pay tuition fees to the host institution (unless otherwise specified by the programme). When planning your exchange budget, you should take into account the following expenses, including but not limited to:

  • Roundtrip flight ticket
  • Accommodation
  • Visa application fee (If applicable)
  • Personal Travel Insurance
  • Daily expenses (e.g. meals, local transportation, laundry, and communication expenses)
  • Activities fee charged by the host institution (if applicable)

  • Personal and miscellaneous expenses

Students are advised to refer to the budgeting information available on the GEO website when planning their finances for exchange studies.

All full-time UGC-funded undergraduate students are eligible for a range of financial assistance schemes to support their exchange studies, including

  1. GEO Scholarship/GEO Funding for Student Exchange
  2. GEO Funding for Student Exchange in Belt and Road Regions for Non-local UG Students (TBC)
  3. HKSAR Government Subsidy (Means-tested Schemes)
  4. HKSAR Government Subsidy (Non-means-tested Subsidies on Exchange to “Belt and Road” Regions (Non-means-tested SSEBR) or Non-means-tested Mainland Experience Scheme (Non-means-tested MES))

Each funding scheme has its own eligibility criteria, coverage, and application requirements. Students are strongly advised to review the detailed requirements of each scheme on GEO Website and confirm their eligibility, as well as the eligibility of their chosen exchange programme, before accepting the offer.

Credit Transfer is compulsory for exchange studies and the approval for GEO funding approval.
Before accepting an exchange offer or selecting subjects at the host institution, students must ensure that suitable PolyU subjects are available for credit transfer.

Students are required to obtain prior approval from the School regarding their study plan and the credit transferability of proposed subjects at least one month before their departure. As the credit transfer assessment process may take time, students should allow sufficient time to identify suitable subjects, review course syllabi, and discuss their study plans with the Exchange Officer, programme leaders and relevant subject lecturers. The application procedures are as follows:

Prior Approval for Subject Selection and Credit Transfer

  1. Download Application for Prior Agreement for Subject Selection at Exchange-out Institution (Form AR41a) from the Academic Registry website and carefully read the Notes to Students.
  2. Review the Credit Transfer Database for previously approved credit transfer records. If no record is available for your host institution or proposed subjects, you may consult the School's Exchange Officer for advice on past credit transfer records. For subjects without previous credit transfer records, students are strongly advised to obtain comments or endorsement from the relevant subject lecturer(s) before submitting Form AR41a.
  3. Students should carefully review the list of subjects and detailed course syllabi of the subjects they intend to take at the host institution to assess whether the subject content and academic level are comparable to those of the corresponding PolyU subjects. In case of doubt, students should consult their Programme Leader and/or the relevant subject lecturer(s).
  4. Complete Form AR41a and submit the hard copy to the General Office (GH506) as early as possible, and no later than one month before the departure date, together with the following supporting documents:
  • Completed Form AR41a;
  • Exchange offer acceptance email issued by GEO or the host institution;
  • Course syllabi of both the host institution subject(s) and the corresponding PolyU subject(s);
  • Email endorsement from the relevant subject lecturer(s), if applicable.
  1. The Exchange Officer will normally inform students of the application result within two weeks upon receipt of a complete application.
  2. If there are any changes to the subjects taken at the host institution after approval has been granted, students should seek approval from the Exchange Officer as soon as possible and provide updated course syllabi. The School will liaise with the relevant subject-offering department(s) and advise students on the revised credit transfer arrangement.

Formal Credit Transfer Application Upon Completion of Exchange

Upon successful completion of the exchange programme, students are required to submit a formal credit transfer application by completing Form AR41c and providing the following documents:

  1. Approved Form AR41a and the confirmation email issued by the School;
  2. Completed Form AR41c;
  3. Official evidence demonstrating successful completion of the subject(s) and credit(s) at the host institution (e.g. official transcript).

The School reserves the right to approve, reject, or otherwise determine the credit transfer application based on the information and supporting documents provided.

Once you receive the official admission offer from the host university, you should apply for your student visa. Check out the detail visa applications through consular affairs' websites.
