Prof DAI Min and Prof ZHENG Yuanqing Receive Prestigious RGC Senior Research Fellowship and Research Fellowship Awards

We are delighted to announce that Professor DAI Min, Chair Professor of Department of Applied Mathematics, and Professor ZHENG Yuanqing, Professor of Department of Computing, both from the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS), have been named RGC Senior Research Fellow and RGC Research Fellow, respectively, under the Research Grants Council (RGC) Senior Research Fellow Scheme (SRFS) and Research Fellow Scheme (RFS) for 2026/27. These prestigious awards recognize their outstanding research and scholarly impact. Professor Dai’s work focuses on pioneering advances in mathematical finance, while Professor Zheng drives transformative developments in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The schemes provide dedicated support to enable them to pursue high-impact research and mentor the next generation of research talent for Hong Kong. Awarded annually to only 10 fellows per scheme, the SRFS and RFS each offer substantial funding of approximately HK$8.5 million and HK$5.6 million, respectively, to sustain long-term research excellence. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Dai and Professor Zheng on this distinguished achievement. Their impactful projects exemplify the University’s strength in translating theoretical innovation into real-world solutions.   Awardee Project Title Abstract Prof DAI Min Multi-dimensional free boundary problems in finance: Theory and algorithms This project aims to address key challenges in financial decision-making that can be formulated as multi-dimensional free boundary problems. Through a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study of four interconnected themes, including deep learning and continuous-time reinforcement learning applied to portfolio selection, corporate finance and option pricing, this research promises significant advances in stochastic control theory, computational methods and financial modeling. Its outcomes will potentially benefit policymakers and investors by improving market understanding and risk management. Prof ZHENG Yuanqing Software-defined edge radio access networks: System architecture and applications   This project aims to design and implement a new software-defined wireless network architecture to address backhaul network pressure in traditional Cloud Radio Access Networks (CRAN). By processing signals locally through an efficient packet processing pipeline, this research will accelerate radio access network innovation to support massive IoT connectivity for smart metering, precision agriculture and the emerging low-altitude economy, facilitating large-scale concurrent communication, wireless sensing and carrier frequency shifting.

Young talents shine at PolyU Young Minds in Computer and Mathematical Sciences Competition 2026

The PolyU Young Minds in Computer and Mathematical Sciences Competition 2026 successfully concluded on 4 July, bringing together more than 250 students from secondary schools across Hong Kong. After participating in the Preliminary Round paper-based test in May, 90 finalists advanced to the Final Round on Saturday to compete in three exciting tracks: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Applied Mathematics, and Computing.   Through a series of engaging challenges, participants demonstrated how mathematical concepts and computational thinking can be applied beyond the classroom. The event was filled with energy and inspiration, as students showcased outstanding problem-solving abilities, creativity, and teamwork while tackling complex tasks.   We were honoured to welcome Prof. CAO Jiannong, Vice President (Education), and Prof. CHEN Changwen, Interim Dean of FCMS, to the Award Presentation Ceremony. Their presence reflected the University’s strong support for nurturing young talents in computer and mathematical sciences. They also expressed appreciation for the participants’ enthusiasm for data-driven disciplines and presented awards to the winning teams in recognition of their exceptional performance.   We hope this experience has inspired participating students to further explore and develop their strengths and interests, and to navigate the fast-developing world of technology with confidence and creativity. Appointment of Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence Systems

The Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor CAO Liangliang as Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence Systems in the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI), effective 29 June 2026. Professor Cao obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 2003 and Master of Philosophy degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2005.  He further received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from University of Illinois    Urbana-Champaign in 2011.  Professor Cao began his career as Research Staff Member at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.  He then joined Yahoo Labs as Senior Research Scientist in 2015 and in 2016 co-founded Switi Inc., a startup which was subsequently acquired by Google in 2018.  Following the acquisition, Professor Cao founded and led the Google Cloud Speech Modelling Team during 2018 and 2021.  He later joined Apple in 2022 as Principal Scientist and Engineering Lead, and Google DeepMind in 2024 as Principal Engineer and Director.  Most recently, he has served as an advisor at OPPO Inc.  Professor Cao has also contributed to academia with adjunct academic appointments at Columbia University from 2013 to 2018 and at University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2021. Professor Cao is a leading expert in artificial intelligence, with research focus on Artificial Intelligence, encompassing Computer Vision, Speech and Language across both cloud-based and on-device systems.  He has played a key role in the development of several large-scale AI systems, including Google Cloud Vision, Google Speech, Gemini and Project Astra.  His publications have received over 11,000 citations, and h-index of 53 (Google Scholar), with the filing of more than 15 patents and publications in top-tier AI venues across multiple areas including Computer Vision, Speech, and Natural Language Processing. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Professor Cao has been elected a Fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2025.  His accolades include IBM Watson Emerging Leader in Multimedia and Signal Processing and First Place in ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge in 2010, IBM Outstanding Accomplishment for Multimedia Team in 2012, ACM SIGMM Rising Star Award in 2017 and Google Cloud Feats of Engineering Award in 2019.  He has also contributed significantly to the academic community, serving as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPAMI) and also on a number of journal boards and conference committees including IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, IEEE MultiMedia, Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation, The Visual Computer, ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications, ACM Conference on Multimedia and AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, etc. Welcome Professor Cao to the FCMS family.

Prof. YANG Xingyi Named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2026 (Healthcare & Science)

Congratulations to Prof. Xingyi Yang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS), and Presidential Young Scholar at PolyU, on being named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2026 list in the Healthcare & Science category. Specialising in generative AI, world models and spatial intelligence, Prof. Yang has built a remarkable research profile with over 5,000 academic citations to date. This includes his 2020 paper on AI-assisted COVID-19 diagnosis, which alone has garnered over 1,000 citations. Dedicated to celebrating impactful young trailblazers in Asia, this recognition is a well-deserved reflection of Prof. Yang’s meaningful contributions to interdisciplinary research. PolyU develops smart assistant “AI-Care” that automatically identifies daily tasks and provides guidance to support independent living for visually impaired people

Hong Kong currently has nearly 200,000 visually impaired people. Although white canes and guide dogs can assist with basic mobility, daily tasks such as shopping and taking public transport remain challenging for them. A research team at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has developed an innovative assistive system, “AI-Care”,which is driven by an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) model. Connecting smart glasses and a mobile application, the system proactively detects surrounding objects and provides voice guidanceto help visually impaired people handle daily tasks independently. The team has partnered with industry collaborator Hillming Smartech Ltd. (HSL) to advance commercialisation, and with the Hong Kong Society for the Blind (HKSB) to launch community trials, aiming to inject new momentum into building an inclusive smart city. The launch ceremony of the AI-Care project was held yesterday (10 June) at the PolyU campus. It was officiated by Prof. the Hon. Kam-fai WONG, Legislative Council Member of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People’s Republic of China; Prof. Changwen CHEN, Interim Dean of the PolyU Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences; Prof. Qing LI, Head of the PolyU Department of Computing; alongside Mr Sean FONG, Chief Executive of HKSB; Mr YANG Zhiming, Technical Director of Assistive Technology of the China Culture and Information Service Center of the Visually Handicapped (China Braille Library); Mr Hillming LI, CEO of HSL; and Ms Shirley TSANG, Director of Rehabilitation Services at HKSB. Project leader Prof. Jing LI, Associate Professor of the PolyU Department of Computing and Associate Director of the PolyU Research Institute for Generative AI also attended the event. Addressing the ceremony, Prof. Changwen Chen said, “PolyU is committed to impactful research. We believe the true measure of technological innovation lies not only in how smart our AI becomes, but also in how deeply it empowers those who need it most. By transforming AI from a passive tool into a proactive companion, AI-Care not just advances the development of assistive technology, but also promotes social inclusion.” Mr Sean Fong remarked, “AI-Care empowers people with visual impairments to transcend physical limitations, enabling them to live more independently and participate in society with confidence. Many of HKSB’s service users have already benefited from such innovations, and we are eager to integrate this novel system into our services.” Mr Hillming Li said, “The Government has been a strong advocate for building an accessible city. AI-Care is not only a successful transfer of cutting-edge technology, but also an innovation with a human touch, empowering underserved communities to experience the world more fully and embrace greater opportunities for a richer and more fulfilling life. We hope to further expand its application and even scale this technology across the country.” AI-Care is built upon an advanced AI model that is adapted from cutting-edge Visual Question Answering and Natural Language Processing frameworks specifically for daily shopping scenarios, covering the full workflow from product searching and payment to receipt audit. Breaking away from the passive “question-and-answer” approach of traditional digital assistive tools, it uses smart glasses to capture the user’s perspective, thereby proactively identifying everyday objects. The system then transfers image data to the mobile application for processing and analysis, and generates real-time audio instructions. Smart glasses available on the market mostly target sighted users, relying on visual context and sight-dependent cues, and therefore do not fully meet the unique needs of visually impaired users. AI-Care, on the other hand, adopted rigorous post-training for its AI model using domain-specific data, making its image recognition and voice guidance better aligned with the spatial perception and cognitive needs of visually impaired users, and ensuring precise, actionable guidance. The system completed phased testing in the first quarter of this year, involving 17 visually impaired participants, and achieved an average satisfaction score of 93. The team plans to scale up the trials through continued collaboration with the social welfare sector. The research team demonstrated the current functions of AI-Care at the event. Prof. Jing Li added, “For our team, what we most look forward to is seeing how AI research can truly support independent living for the visually impaired. While current AI models show impressive generic skills, enabling them to understand users’ needs as flexibly and accurately as human assistants, to know how to provide help and to intervene proactively at the right moment remains a major challenge. AI-Care embodies a human-centric approach to technology and marks a major step forward in the development of AI-powered assistive tools.” Supported by HK$5 million in funding from the HKSAR Government’s Innovation and Technology Fund and other industry sponsors, the research team has completed the design of the core AI model and verified the stability of the cloud-based server. The team is currently working to enhance the system’s memory management, optimise the hardware and advance prototyping, with the aim of commercialising the technology and expanding its application.

Prof. Yujie WU Honoured with PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2026 Warmest congratulations to Prof. Yujie Wu, Assistant Professor of Department of Computing, on receiving the PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2026.  This prestigious university‑level award recognises outstanding young faculty members whose research demonstrates exceptional originality and innovation. Out of over 60 submissions, Prof. Wu emerged as one of only six faculty members selected for this honour.  The award recognises his research project, “Scaling by Smarter Neurons: A Neural-Inspired Foundation Model Framework for Enhanced Long-sequence Understanding and Energy-Efficient Computation” for its innovative research direction. Each awardee receives HK$500,000 in research funding and a personal cash prize of HK$20,000 in support of their research endeavours. This achievement reflects Prof. Wu’s strong research vision and scholarly impact.  We extend our sincere congratulations again to Prof. Wu on this distinguished recognition and look forward to his continued contributions to cutting‑edge AI research.

Professor Allen Au Receives RAISe+ Funding for Fintech Research Project Prof. Allen Au, Associate Head (Research and Development) and Professor of Department of Computing, has secured funding support for a Fintech research project in the third round of the Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus (RAISe+) Scheme, administered by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC). Launched in 2023 with a funding allocation of $10 billion, the RAISe+ Scheme provides matching funding to research teams from University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities whose projects demonstrate strong potential for successful start-up ventures. Each approved project may receive funding support ranging from $10 million to $100 million. Prof. Au’s project, titled “ShieldTrade: Multi-layer Defense System for Secure Web3 Transactions”, aims to develop ShieldTrade, a next-generation Web3 security system, to provide end-to-end security protection for Web3 users by detecting risky transactions before execution and blocking malicious activities in real time. We extend our warmest congratulations to Prof. Au on this funding achievement and look forward to seeing his high-commercialisation-potential project contribute to Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology hub.

Interim Dean Prof. Changwen CHEN Named in “PolyU Top 10 Research & Innovation Stories of the Year”   Prof. Chen, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS) and Chair Professor of Visual Computing in the Department of Computing, has been recognised for his pioneering work on VideoMind — a novel multi-modal agent developed by his team that enables AI to perform long video reasoning and question-answering tasks by emulating human-like thinking.   This breakthrough addresses a key challenge in AI, where existing models often struggle to understand long videos, and it accelerates the development of generative AI-assisted video analysis. Prof. Daniel Luo Receives Gold Award in the Government Departments and Public Bodies Sector of Cyber Security Professional Awards 2025

We are delighted to announce that Prof. LUO Xiapu Daniel, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Professor of COMP, has been honoured with the Gold Award in the Government Departments & Public Bodies Sector of the Cyber Security Professional Awards 2025 (CSPA 2025). Organised by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force, this award recognises Prof. Luo’s outstanding achievements and significant contributions to the cybersecurity community.   Prof. Luo and his team have developed pioneering methods for identifying severe security vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure and applications, as well as innovative strategies to defend against cyberattacks. Their research spans a wide range of platforms, including fintech systems such as Layer-1 blockchain networks (e.g., Ethereum), Layer-2 rollups (e.g., Arbitrum, Polygon), Android and vendor-customized Android implementations from leading manufacturers (e.g., Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo), real-time operating systems (RTOS) like QNX, and key automotive components such as Tesla’s lane detection module. They have also uncovered numerous security issues in mobile apps and smart contracts, proactively informing developers and companies to facilitate swift resolutions and safeguard millions of users.   Additionally, Prof. Luo’s advanced defensive techniques have enabled the analysis of sophisticated mobile malware and the defence against attacks targeting blockchain platforms, smart contracts, and vehicles. His research findings have been published at top security conferences and in leading journals, earning multiple awards and industry recognition. Notably, he received the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize (FinTech) 2023 for his contributions to blockchain security and was recognised by Stanford University as one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists, further highlighting his global impact and research excellence.
