Prof. Yujie WU Honoured with PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2026 Warmest congratulations to Prof. Yujie Wu, Assistant Professor of Department of Computing, on receiving the PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (YIRA) 2026.  This prestigious university‑level award recognises outstanding young faculty members whose research demonstrates exceptional originality and innovation. Out of over 60 submissions, Prof. Wu emerged as one of only six faculty members selected for this honour.  The award recognises his research project, “Scaling by Smarter Neurons: A Neural-Inspired Foundation Model Framework for Enhanced Long-sequence Understanding and Energy-Efficient Computation” for its innovative research direction. Each awardee receives HK$500,000 in research funding and a personal cash prize of HK$20,000 in support of their research endeavours. This achievement reflects Prof. Wu’s strong research vision and scholarly impact.  We extend our sincere congratulations again to Prof. Wu on this distinguished recognition and look forward to his continued contributions to cutting‑edge AI research.

Professor Allen Au Receives RAISe+ Funding for Fintech Research Project

Professor Allen Au Receives RAISe+ Funding for Fintech Research Project Prof. Allen Au, Associate Head (Research and Development) and Professor of Department of Computing, has secured funding support for a Fintech research project in the third round of the Research, Academic and Industry Sectors One-plus (RAISe+) Scheme, administered by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC). Launched in 2023 with a funding allocation of $10 billion, the RAISe+ Scheme provides matching funding to research teams from University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities whose projects demonstrate strong potential for successful start-up ventures. Each approved project may receive funding support ranging from $10 million to $100 million. Prof. Au’s project, titled “ShieldTrade: Multi-layer Defense System for Secure Web3 Transactions”, aims to develop ShieldTrade, a next-generation Web3 security system, to provide end-to-end security protection for Web3 users by detecting risky transactions before execution and blocking malicious activities in real time. We extend our warmest congratulations to Prof. Au on this funding achievement and look forward to seeing his high-commercialisation-potential project contribute to Hong Kong’s development as an international innovation and technology hub.

Interim Dean Prof. Changwen CHEN Named in “PolyU Top 10 Research & Innovation Stories of the Year”   Prof. Chen, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS) and Chair Professor of Visual Computing in the Department of Computing, has been recognised for his pioneering work on VideoMind — a novel multi-modal agent developed by his team that enables AI to perform long video reasoning and question-answering tasks by emulating human-like thinking.   This breakthrough addresses a key challenge in AI, where existing models often struggle to understand long videos, and it accelerates the development of generative AI-assisted video analysis. Prof. Daniel Luo Receives Gold Award in the Government Departments and Public Bodies Sector of Cyber Security Professional Awards 2025

We are delighted to announce that Prof. LUO Xiapu Daniel, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Professor of COMP, has been honoured with the Gold Award in the Government Departments & Public Bodies Sector of the Cyber Security Professional Awards 2025 (CSPA 2025). Organised by the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force, this award recognises Prof. Luo’s outstanding achievements and significant contributions to the cybersecurity community.   Prof. Luo and his team have developed pioneering methods for identifying severe security vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure and applications, as well as innovative strategies to defend against cyberattacks. Their research spans a wide range of platforms, including fintech systems such as Layer-1 blockchain networks (e.g., Ethereum), Layer-2 rollups (e.g., Arbitrum, Polygon), Android and vendor-customized Android implementations from leading manufacturers (e.g., Samsung, Xiaomi, Vivo), real-time operating systems (RTOS) like QNX, and key automotive components such as Tesla’s lane detection module. They have also uncovered numerous security issues in mobile apps and smart contracts, proactively informing developers and companies to facilitate swift resolutions and safeguard millions of users.   Additionally, Prof. Luo’s advanced defensive techniques have enabled the analysis of sophisticated mobile malware and the defence against attacks targeting blockchain platforms, smart contracts, and vehicles. His research findings have been published at top security conferences and in leading journals, earning multiple awards and industry recognition. Notably, he received the BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize (FinTech) 2023 for his contributions to blockchain security and was recognised by Stanford University as one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists, further highlighting his global impact and research excellence.

Prof Sun named 2026 AMS Fellow

Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS) 2025

The Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award aims to give recognition to distinguished graduates of PolyU for great distinction in their respective areas, dedicated support to their alma mater, as well as impactful contributions to the wider community. We are delighted to announce the recipients of the 2025 Outstanding Alumni Award from the PolyU Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FCMS). Congratulations to all the awardees!     Outstanding Alumni Award in Scholarly Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences Prof. LIN Zhouchen Professor, School of Intelligence Science and Technology, Peking University         Prof. LIN completed his Master of Philosophy in the Department of Applied Mathematics in 1997 and was recognised as the Outstanding Alumni of PolyU Department of Applied Mathematics in 2022. He is an internationally acclaimed scholar whose pioneering research in machine learning, computer vision, and numerical optimization has significantly impacted both academia and industry. Prof. LIN’s academic excellence is reflected in his extensive publication record, boasting over 200 papers in top-tier venues and more than 40,000 citations (h-index 87). As a distinguished leader in the global research community, Prof. LIN has served as an Associate Editor for prestigious journals and as an Area Chair for major conferences. His outstanding accomplishments have earned him numerous honors, including being named a Distinguished Young Scholar by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and being elected Fellow of IEEE, IAPR, CSIG, and AAIA. He is also a recipient of the First Prize of the China Computer Federation (CCF) Natural Science Award in 2020.       Outstanding Alumni Award in Professional Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences Ir WONG Chi Kwong, Tony, JP Commissioner for Digital Policy, Digital Policy Office of the HKSAR Government       Ir WONG graduated from Hong Kong Polytechnic, the University’s predecessor, in 1987 with a Higher Diploma in Systems Analysis, and has since dedicated over 35 years of distinguished service in various IT-related departments of the Hong Kong SAR Government.  As the current Commissioner for Digital Policy, Ir WONG leads the Digital Policy Office in formulating data-driven, user-centric, and outcome-based policies that accelerate the development of a digital government. His leadership enhances the efficiency and quality of public services, benefiting both citizens and businesses. Ir WONG oversees key areas including digital government strategies, data governance, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and the promotion of digital transformation across public services and industries. He also plays a pivotal role in closing the digital divide, fostering IT collaboration with the Mainland, especially within the Greater Bay Area, and supporting Hong Kong’s integration into national development.       Outstanding Alumni Award in Professional Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences Miss LEE Ka Yi Professional squash athlete, Hong Kong Sports Institute       Miss LEE Ka Yi graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Investment Science in 2016 and was recognised as the Outstanding Young Alumni of PolyU Department of Applied Mathematics in 2022. Since starting formal training at the Hong Kong Sports Institute and turning professional in 2014, Miss LEE has risen to become one of the Hong Kong’s leading squash athletes. She is currently ranked 33rd in the PSA World Rankings and 2nd in Hong Kong as of August 2025. Her exceptional talent and dedication have led to impressive performances in numerous local and international competitions.       Outstanding Alumni Award in Professional Achievement of PolyU Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences Miss HO Bianca Yan Ting Director of Information Technology (Global), Swire Hotels Group         Miss HO is a graduate of BSc (Hons) in Computer Science and BBA (Hons) in Management (Double Degree) in 2017, and she was named the Outstanding Young Alumni of PolyU Department of Computing in 2024. As a recent graduate, Miss HO has already achieved remarkable professional success. As Director of IT at Swire Hotels Group, she leads a global team of IT professionals across multiple cities, managing day-to-day operations and strategic initiatives. Her exceptional leadership earned her the prestigious World CIO 200 Award at a young age. In addition to her professional achievements, Miss HO has made significant contributions to the university community. She has served as Honorary Secretary of the Computing Alumni Association for the past two years, playing a key role in fostering alumni engagement and support various university initiatives.

Prof Sun named 2026 AMS Fellow

Professor Sun Defeng Named 2026 Fellow of the American Mathematical Society

We are proud to announce that Chair Professor Sun Defeng, Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics, has been named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) for 2026. Professor Sun joins a distinguished group of forty mathematicians from around the world who have been selected for this honor in the program’s fourteenth year. The AMS Fellows program recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics. Being elected as an AMS Fellow is an acknowledgement of Professor Sun’s excellence and leadership in the mathematical sciences, as well as his significant impact on the profession. Professor Sun is internationally renowned for his research in optimization, operations research, and numerical analysis. He has made pioneering contributions to the theory and algorithms for large-scale optimization problems, including semidefinite programming, conic programming, and matrix completion. His work has been widely published in top-tier journals and has had a profound influence on both theoretical developments and practical applications in areas such as data science, engineering, and finance. In addition to the AMS Fellowship, Professor Sun’s outstanding achievements have been recognized with numerous prestigious honors. He was elected Fellow of the Operations Research Society of China (ORSC) in 2024, and named Fellow of both the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the China Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CSIAM) in 2020. He received the RGC Senior Research Fellow Award for 2022/23, and was honored with the Beale–Orchard-Hays Prize for Excellence in Computational Mathematical Programming by the Mathematical Optimization Society in 2018. This prestigious recognition is awarded by peers in the international mathematical community, highlighting Professor Sun’s dedication and achievements in advancing mathematics.
