CNERC-Rail Cooperation with Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority

From February 14 to 16, 2023, members of the Hong Kong Branch of the CNERC-Rail (Dr. Wei Jiang and Mr. Zheng-Xin Che), member of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority (Mr. Qing-Fa Wu) and member of Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Mr. Jun-Jie Zhang) went to the exposure test station of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge for on-site experiment. Under the strict management of the bridge site infrastructure by Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority, center members installed temperature-humidity sensors and transmitted the monitoring data to the cloud hard disk.

CNERC-Rail visits MAV/UUV lab at AAE PolyU

On 14 February 2023, CNERC-Rail visited Prof. Chih-Yung WEN’s MAV/UUV laboratory at the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering (AAE), the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof. WEN and MAV/UUV team members warmly welcomed our visit, and introduced the MAV/UUV research work. They also gave a wonderful demo to show how the MAV/UUV works. At the end, CNERC-Rail members discussed with Prof. WEN for the application of robotics technologies (i.e., MAV/UUV) for civil infrastructure inspection for further collaboration.

Presentation given by Dr. Qi Zhao

On 13 February, Dr. Qi Zhao, assistant professor of department of civil and environmental engineering, was invited to give a presentation to members of the CNERC-Rail. This seminar mainly covered his research progress of deployments for film sensors on rail track monitoring. Dr. Zhao also introduced his research on Micro-CT technology. Our members and Dr. Qi Zhao shared ideas and discussed further on railway monitoring related topics during the seminar.

Site visit to the Lo Wu Station

On 7 February 2023, 12 members of the CNERC-Rail visited the site near MTR Lo Wu Station to ensure the safety of the operating railway. The optical fibre transmission distance and junction box location were confirmed with the MTR official contractor. In addition, optical fibre protection and installation details were discussed with MTR during this site visit.

EMSD representatives visited CNERC-Rail Centre

Mr Chan, Asst Director (Railways) and Mr Cheong, Chief Engineer (Railways) of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), HKSAR, visited Industrial Centre CNERC-Rail Corner at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 30th January 2023. Dr Siu Kai Lai (Associate Professor), Dr Qi Zhao (Assistant Professor), Dr Wai Kei Ao (Research Assistant Professor), Dr Kenneth Lai (Scientific officer), Dr Wen-Qiang Liu (Postdoctoral Fellow), Ms Jia-Mei Wang, Mr Bo-Yang Su and Mr Tai-Tung Wai warmly welcomed Mr Chan and Mr Cheong. CNERC-Rail introduced the outstanding Maglev experimental platform, leading research focuses, latest achievements, and corresponding research facilities to all guests during their visit.  

Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) visits CNERC-Rail Centre

Ms Margaret Fong (Executive Director), Mr Stephen Liang (Assistant Executive Director, Industry Promotion), Ms Anna Cheung (Director, Service Promotion), Ms Smilely Lam (Director, Merchandise Trade & Promotion), Mr Eddie Lee (Associate Director, Merchandise Trade & Promotion), Mr Bradford Lee (Associate Director, Merchandise Trade & Promotion) from HKTDC visited Industrial Centre CNERC-Rail Corner at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 18th January 2023. Dr Wai Kei Ao (Research Assistant Professor), Dr You-Wu Wang (Research Assistant Professor), Dr E Deng (Postdoctoral Fellow), Ms Jia-Mei Wang, Mr Bo-Yang Su and Mr Tai-Tung Wai warmly welcomed Ms Fong and other senior administrative members. CNERC-Rail introduced the main research focuses and corresponding research facilities and achievements to all guests during their visit.

Shenzhen Construction Engineering New Technology Promotion Catalog (2022)

CNERC-Rail was awarded one of the promotion items of “Shenzhen Construction Engineering New Technology Promotion Catalog (2022)” on 06th December 2022, which is the technology of the modular rail particle damper (MRPD) in railway application of vibration and noise mitigation. 

CNERC-Rail won an Outstanding Project Award in an Innovation and Creativity Competition on Reinforcement Learning

The competition held in Nanjing was jointly organized by JiangSu Association of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Brain Laboratory, and POLIXIR. Hundreds of teams from local and foreign universities, research institutes and enterprises participated in the competition. CNERC-Rail’s team comprising Ms ZHU Qi and Mr. LU Yang presented their project entitled “Maglev suspension control based on Reinforcement Learning”. After several rounds of screening by a panel of academic and industrial experts, results were announced in Nov 2022. CNERC-Rail won the Outstanding Project Award together with 7 other teams.

Anhui Architectural Design and Research Institute visits CNERC-Rail Centre

Mr Zheng-An Xu (Former General Manager, Chief Engineer of Anhui Architectural Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd.) visited CNERC-Rail and research facilities in Industrial Centre on 11 November 2022. Prof Yi-Qing Ni (Director of CNERC-Rail) and Dr You-Wu Wang (Research Assistant Professor of CNERC-Rail) warmly welcomed Mr Xu, and introduced the latest developments and achievements of CNERC-Rail.  

Attending the Symposium on Implementing the Innovation and Technology Policy of the Hong Kong Chief Executive’s 2022 Policy Address

1st November 2022, Dr You-Wu Wang, Dr Wai-Kei Ao and Dr Zheng-Wei Chen (Research Assistant Professors of CNERC-Rail) were invited to attend the Symposium on Implementing the Innovation and Technology Policy of the Hong Kong Chief Executive’s 2022 Policy Address.   On behalf of Prof. Yi-Qing Ni (Director of CNERC-Rail), Drs. Wang, Ao and Chen introduced research profiles of CNERC-Rail to Prof. Dong Sun (Director of Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau of Hong Kong). Prof. Dong Sun expressed his appreciation for the support of Prof. Yi-Qing Ni and the research team of CNERC-Rail.
