PolyU Chinese Language Centre Hosts Workshop at Learning & Teaching Expo 2026 on AI‑Assisted Language Play and Assessment

On 26 June 2026, the Chinese Language Centre (CLC) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) successfully conducted a featured workshop titled “AI‑Assisted Language Play and Assessment” at the Learning & Teaching Expo 2026, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Led by Dr Gao Xiaoping, Director of CLC; Dr Lam Yan‑yan, Associate Director; and Instructor Mr Jiang Xinyu, the workshop attracted a large audience of educators from across the field. This year’s Expo, themed “Reimagining Education: Human‑Centric, Future-Ready,” was organised by the Smart City Consortium, presented by the Hong Kong Education City, and supported by the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government. As one of Asia’s premier educational events, the three‑day Expo (25–27 June 2026) brought together educators, experts, scholars, and innovators worldwide to explore the latest developments in educational innovation and technology applications. CLC has long been dedicated to driving innovation in language pedagogy. In this workshop, the three speakers demonstrated how artificial intelligence (AI) can be integrated with gamification elements to enhance language teaching and assessment design, showcasing AI’s potential to boost student motivation and learning outcomes. They also presented a series of forward‑looking, evidence‑based teaching practices. Dr Gao Xiaoping elaborated on PolyU’s “Education 4.0” vision in response to the age of AI, explaining how the University is leveraging AI to reshape educational models, support language learning, and build a complete “Learning – Practice – Assessment” teaching loop. The workshop content was rich and multidimensional, covering AI‑powered interactive learning tools, real‑time feedback systems, and gamified assessment strategies. A live demonstration of PolyU CLC’s AI‑powered Chinese learning metaverse was also featured, offering attendees cutting‑edge teaching insights and practical inspiration. Pioneering AI as a Tool for Chinese Language Learning: PolyU Chinese Language Centre Delivers Workshops at AIinLT 2026

The Chinese Language Centre (CLC) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) successfully delivered two workshops themed “AI as a Tool for Language Learning” on 23 and 24 June 2026 at the International Summit on the Use of AI in Language Learning and Teaching 2026 (AIinLT 2026). The workshops received an enthusiastic response and drew a large audience of educators, reflecting the soaring industry demand and high anticipation for AI‑integrated language education. The Summit was co-organised by the Education Bureau, the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR), and the Department of English and Communication at PolyU. The theme of this year is “AI in Language Education: From Ideas to Implementation to Impact”. The Summit brought together language education experts, scholars, and frontline teachers worldwide to explore the latest applications and emerging trends in AI‑driven language learning and teaching. Beyond hosting the specialised workshops, CLC teaching staff also delivered featured presentations, sharing innovative pedagogical practices and forward‑looking insights on Chinese language education in the age of AI. Rooted in PolyU's “Education 4.0” strategic vision for AI-era educational transformation, the workshops were designed to align with the University’s forward‑looking curriculum development direction. In response to evolving educational needs, PolyU has launched a landmark curriculum reform, jointly developing the first compulsory undergraduate course of its kind in Hong Kong — “AI as a Tool for Language Learning (AITLL)” — in collaboration between the Chinese Language Centre and the English Language Centre at PolyU. This pioneering course will be officially launched for all incoming undergraduate students starting from this September. Tailored specifically for frontline primary and secondary school teachers, the workshops were structured around the core framework of the University’s new AITLL course. The sessions translated advanced university-level pedagogical theories and practical case studies into adaptable, school-based teaching solutions, covering a comprehensive range of key topics including gamified teaching strategies, AI literacy, AI-assisted project-based language learning, AI-assisted lesson design and text analysis, as well as multimodal language learning approaches. Participants experienced first‑hand how AI can revolutionise traditional language teaching paradigms, enhance student motivation, and improve learning outcomes. The workshops were conducted by Director of CLC Dr Gao Xiaoping and the AITLL teaching team, who engaged in in‑depth exchanges with attending educators and shared real‑world experiences. Moving forward, the Chinese Language Centre at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University will continue to prioritise educational innovation, advance the deep integration of AI and language education, expand the possibilities of smart pedagogy, and inject new vigour into the future development of Chinese language education in Hong Kong and beyond. "Discover Chinese New Year: 2026 Spring Festival and Lantern Festival Cultural Experience" successfully held

In support of the Hong Kong Government’s global “Study in Hong Kong” campaign, the Chinese Language Centre and Confucius Institute of Hong Kong at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University co-hosted the “Discover Chinese New Year: 2026 Spring Festival and Lantern Festival Cultural Experience” on 26 February 2026. International students gathered at the Hong Kong Confucius Institute to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and traditions. Through a series of interactive activities—including Chinese calligraphy, paper-cutting art, Hanfu try-ons, language games, and festive refreshments—students explored the rich heritage of the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival. Ir Professor Mui Kwok Wai, Dean of Students at the Student Affairs Office; Dr. Gao Xiaoping, Director of the Chinese Language Centre; and Dr. Lu Qiaomei, Director of the Confucius Institute of Hong Kong, attended the celebration, engaging with international students and sharing in the joy of these traditional festivals.

國際應用寫作學會第十八屆學術大會在長春成功舉辦 香港理工大學助力AI時代應用寫作創新

2025年7月18日至20日，由國際應用寫作學會和長春理工大學主辦，長春理工大學文學院與香港理工大學中國語文教學中心聯合承辦的第十八屆學術大會暨第三屆青年學者學術研討會在長春召開。本次大會以“人工智慧時代的應用寫作研究暨紀念《應用寫作》創刊四十周年”為主題，匯聚了來自美國、越南、中國內地及港澳地區等200余位元專家學者，共同探討AI技術驅動下的應用寫作理論重構與教學實踐創新。本次大會共評選出79篇優秀論文（含36篇學術大會優秀論文獎、43篇青年學者優秀論文獎）。   (1) 香港理工大學的學術領導力與核心貢獻  作為聯合承辦單位，香港理工大學在大會中展現了突出的學術影響力： 陳瑞端教授（學會會長）致開幕詞，聚焦 “學術誠信和真實性” 等關鍵問題，指出在人工智能興起的當下，共同探討人工智能如何成為寫作教學和研究的盟友，批判性地審視它的局限性以及它所引發的關於作者身份、原創性和評價的深刻問題，對於應用寫作邁上一個新高度具有重要意義。她還主持了 7 月 18 日的國際應用寫作學會第十八次理事會議，統籌學會事務決策，保障會議流程有序推進。 鄭紹基博士（中國語文教學中心首席講師）主持了7月20日上午第一場大會精選報告的發表與評議，有力推動了討論深度。 其他三位來自香港理工大學中國語文教學中心的學者分別做了關於“人機協同商務寫作”“AI+應用文教學”“應用文的實用性與專業性”等議題的學術報告，並分別獲得了優秀論文獎。   (2) 香港高校協同創新：多元化學術參與    除香港理工大學外，香港其他高校學者亦深度參與了學術研討： 香港大學：羅嘉怡教授主持了大會主題發言以及關於“AI+應用寫作教學”的分會場討論，從學術視角提出了回饋。 香港浸會大學：吳學忠博士做了關於香港新聞公報研究的報告，並擔任了分會場報告的學術觀察員及大會自由發言的主持人。 香港教育大學：共三位元學者在“超語視角下的應用寫作”、“AI+古詩詞應用寫作教學”等方面做了學術報告。

Award-Winning News

Ms. Cao Ruiwen from the Cangwu Literary Society recently won the first runner-up in the student category of the 34th Chinese Poetry Writing Competition with her work Du Fu Jiang Ge in the form of Bu Suan Zi. The winning pieces are available on the Hong Kong Public Libraries website and will be displayed in major libraries starting February 2025. The public is welcome to enjoy these creations.   Since 2019, the Cangwu Literary Society has focused on honoring humanistic spirit, promoting literary ideals, and showcasing cultural vitality through various artistic activities, encouraging making friends through literature.

The Mandarin Debate Team of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU MDT) advanced to the finals of the 2024 Inter-collegiate Mandarin Debate Competition, organized by RTHK's Putonghua Channel, with an impressive record of three wins in three matches, ultimately being awarded the first runner-up.
