An Intangible Cultural Heritage Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Workshop exclusively

13 Jul 2026

On 13 July, the Confucius Institute of Hong Kong hosted an Intangible Cultural Heritage Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Workshop exclusively for international students enrolled in the 2026 PolyU Summer School programme.

Delivered entirely in English, the workshop commenced with an introductory session led by professional instructors, who elaborated on the long-standing history, craftsmanship characteristics and profound cultural connotations of traditional mother-of-pearl inlay art to help overseas participants gain a comprehensive understanding of this iconic Chinese craft. Afterwards, students proceeded to the core hands-on creation session. Under professional guidance, participants followed the whole production procedure of mother-of-pearl inlay and crafted their exclusive art pieces independently.

A free session was arranged at the end of the workshop, where students took group photos with their finished handmade works and visited the exhibition gallery of the Confucius Institute of Hong Kong.

This immersive experience enabled international students from different countries to get up close to precious Chinese intangible cultural heritage, appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship and unique oriental ingenuity embodied in mother-of-pearl inlay art. The engaging hands-on practice also deepened their understanding of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and served as a lively bridge for cultural exchange between China and the rest of the world.
