About Confucius Institute of Hong Kong
The Confucius Institute is an international non-profit educational institution dedicated to the development of international Chinese language education. Its mission is to enhance global understanding of the Chinese language and culture, promote Sino-foreign educational cooperation and people-to-people exchange, and contribute to the diversity of world cultures and the building of a harmonious world.
The Confucius Institute of Hong Kong (CIHK), hosted by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was officially inaugurated in 2006, marking a unique place in history: it is not only the first Confucius Institute established within mainland China but also the only one in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Operating under the institutional framework of "One Country, Two Systems," CIHK leverages Hong Kong's unique position as a premier hub for East-West cultural exchange. By drawing on PolyU's innovative spirit and rich educational resources, it actively promotes cultural and educational synergy between Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as between Hong Kong and the rest of the world.
Positioned as a "Super-connector" and a "Super Value-adder" between China and the world, CIHK builds a robust bridge for dialogue and mutual learning among diverse civilizations. Unlike most overseas Confucius Institutes, which prioritize international Chinese language teaching as their core mandate, CIHK operates within Hong Kong's distinct contextual environment. While it continues to provide comprehensive Chinese language courses, it places a stronger emphasis on Chinese cultural education, dissemination, and academic exchanges.
CIHK delivers a wide spectrum of academic and cultural programmes, including lecture series, specialized courses, research projects, cultural competitions, Chinese culture workshops, cultural study tours, as well as student visits and receptions. Committed to proactively promoting Chinese language and culture globally, the Institute maintains extensive connections with educational institutions worldwide. Through these efforts, it supports international Chinese language education, facilitates cross-cultural understanding, and lays a solid cultural foundation for long-term educational and academic partnerships between institutions at home and abroad.
