PolyU Info Day for Taught Postgraduate Programmes

The online PolyU Info Day for Taught Postgraduate Programmes was successfully held on 8 Jan 2022 (Sat).   The Programme Leaders, Prof. Anthony Chen and Prof. Daniel Tsang, introduced the programme details and admission information of MSc in Civil Engineering and MSc in Environmental Management and Engineering respectively.   Participants were also able to ask questions during the Q&A session.

New joiner - Dr Ling Leng

Dr Ling Leng obtained his B.S. in Water Science and Engineering from Chongqing University (2012), M.S. (with Distinction, 2013) and Ph.D. (2018) in Environmental Engineering from PolyU. Before joining PolyU as Research Assistant Professor, Dr Leng was a Postdoctoral Researcher and JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Hawaii, US (2018) and National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan (2018-2021) respectively. Dr Leng’s research focuses on microbial process and technology for the degradation of recalcitrant environmental contaminants and synthesis of biorenewable products from waste streams. His specialties include applying molecular biology, bioinformatics and machine learning tools to discover complex microbial processes in both environmental and engineered ecosystems and further improve our biotechnology for achieving environmental sustainability. Dr Leng has joined us on 10 Jan 2022.

Prof. Yin Jian-hua, Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics, hosted a demonstration of clay reclamation model test in Hydraulic Laboratory during the Departmental Advisory Committee (DAC) meeting on 5 Jan 2022.

Prof. GUO Hai’s Project Awarded Funding in Second Round One-off CRF COVID-19 and NIR Research Exercises

In the second round one-off CRF COVID-19 and Novel Infectious Diseases (NIR) Research Exercises, the RGC received a total of 115 applications. Out of the 34 full proposals received, 20 were selected for interview.  Finally, 16 proposals were supported by the RGC with a total amount of $92.3 million (exclusive on-costs), including 3 proposals supported for one-year seed money and exploratory funding amounting to $6.7 million in total.   PolyU submitted 22 preliminary proposals, 7 full proposals and 5 full proposals were shortlisted for interview in early December 2021.  Finally, 3 proposals are supported by the RGC with a total funding of $14,120,540, of which one of the Project Coordinators is Prof. GUO Hai from CEE.  The details are as follows:   Ref. New joiner - Dr Peichen Wu

Dr Peichen Wu obtained his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.   His research interests include physical and numerical modelling of marine deposits, ground improvement techniques on soft soils, geosynthetics, as well as monitoring of trees and geotechnical structures under wind loads.   Dr Wu has joined us on 1 January 2022.

CNERC-Rail was invited to participate in video shooting for《創科新里程 I&T New Era》of RTHK

CNERC-Rail was invited by RTHK to participate in a video shooting for the programme《創科新里程 I&T New Era》in September 2021. The programme, which consists of 22 three-minute episodes, introduces the research projects and achievements of the 16 State Key Laboratories (SKLs) and the six Hong Kong Branches of Chinese National Engineering Research Centres (CNERCs). The videos outline how these research projects improve people's daily lives, aiming to enhance the public's understanding of this scientific research.   The chapter of CNERC-Rail will be broadcasted in Mar/Apr 2022 on RTHK TV 31 at 20:25. Each chapter would be repetitively broadcasted via RTHK 31 & 32 after the first broadcast date.
