I. Application for Admission to the Degree of Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy

A limited number of research student places are available. You are advised to read the Prospectus for Postgraduate Studies which provides basic information about all postgraduate programmes offered by PolyU.

Admission Information

You are advised to contact our academic staff to jointly formulate a proposal. Application must be made on-line via PolyU eAdmission (please click here). A non-refundable fee of HK$200 will be charged for each application.


Shortlisted applicants will be invited for presentations and interviews. Interviews will be held between December 2019 and January 2020, during which you will be expected to present your research proposal.

Deadline for submitting initial applications to the Research Grants Council (RGC) by the applicants for allocation of reference numbers: 2 December 2019

IV. Research Students under Residency Programme 

The School has recently established a new route called the Resident Optometrist - Research for applicants who are interested in clinical research. Eligible candidate must be a graduate with an optometric qualification recognized by the Hong Kong Optometrists Board for Part I of the Optometrist Register. They should have good clinical performance in their optometric training. Research students via this route are required to provide quality teaching and eye care services as well as devote oneself to a PhD study.

Application period for Residency Programme

The programme will call for applications next year.

V. Research Students under Teaching Postgraduate Studentship (TPS) Scheme

PolyU has set up a TPS scheme under which full-time research postgraduate students of the University will be provided with financial support during certain periods of their studies, to allow them to fully focus on their studies, upon academic departments' recommendation. It is in the form of an appointment as a part-time Teaching Assistant in their departments/ schools in accordance with the University's policies on part-time appointment.

Full-time research students will benefit from having more teaching experience and training opportunities for widening their exposure for the development of their academic career if they are recommended to take up this postgraduate studentship.
