Application for Admission to the Degree of Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy 

The School invites high calibre students with evidence of academic excellence, research ability and good communication skills to apply for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) studies. Please refer to the information about our research areas and programmes, and read the Prospectus for Postgraduate Studies which provides admission and study information about the research postgraduate programmes at PolyU.

Studentship/Assistantship Opportunities

I. Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2021/22

Full-time PhD applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS). Please visit the HKPFS webpage for details. Our HKPFS awardee has shared some words which can be viewed here.

Application period for submitting initial applications to the Research Grants Council (RGC) by the applicants for allocation of reference numbers: from 1 September 2020 at 12:00 noon (Hong Kong Time) to 1 December 2020 at 12:00 noon (Hong Kong Time)

Deadline for submission of full applications to PolyU: 2 December 2020 at 11:59 p.m. (Hong Kong Time)

Applicants for admission to our PhD programme via HKPFS will also concurrently be considered for other studentship schemes at PolyU.

II. PolyU Postgraduate Studentship

A limited number of studentship places are available for full-time research postgraduate students. Students will be offered financial support, allowing them to focus fully on their studies. Granting of studentships/assistantships will be reviewed on an annual basis, subject to satisfactory performance. Recipients of studentships are required to provide support for teaching and scholarly activities.

III. Teaching Postgraduate Studentship (TPS) Scheme

Under the TPS scheme, full-time research postgraduate students will be provided with financial support during certain periods of their studies, to allow them to fully focus on their studies. 

It is in the form of an appointment as a part-time Teaching Assistant in their departments/ schools in accordance with the University's policies on part-time appointment.

TPS students will benefit from having more teaching experience and training opportunities for widening their exposure for the development of their academic career if they are recommended to take up this Assistantship.

Some projects are currently seeking research students. Interested parties are advised to contact the principal investigator by email.

V. Residency Programme

The School has recently established a new route called the Resident Optometrist - Research for applicants who are interested in clinical research. Eligible candidate must be a graduate with an optometric qualification recognized by the Hong Kong Optometrists Board for Part I of the Optometrist Register. They should have good clinical performance in their optometric training. Research students via this route are required to provide quality teaching and eye care services with an appointment under the Residency Programme as well as devote oneself to a PhD study.

Admission Information

You are advised to contact our academic staff (click here for the list of staff) to jointly formulate a proposal. Application must be made on-line via PolyU eAdmission (please click here). A non-refundable fee of HK$200 will be charged for each application.

Interview

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for presentations and interviews. Interviews will be held between December 2020 and January 2021, during which you will be expected to present your research proposal.
