Myopia (short-sightedness) is prevalent in Hong Kong. It is associated with genetic and environmental factors including parental myopia, extensive near work and lack of outdoor activities. Higher myopia is associated with greater risk of eye diseases and complications, such as macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and glaucoma.
