During the clinical placement programme at the University of Waterloo, we saw our patients and shadowed speciality clinics like low vision, binocular vision, and acute care. In Hong Kong, we rarely encounter ocular emergencies and have limited authority to manage them. At Waterloo, I participated in managing and prescribing therapeutic drugs under supervision, which was a new experience for me.

I particularly enjoyed the acute care clinic for its unpredictability and the reward of seeing patients improve. I found it challenging yet enjoyable when discussing differential diagnosis and treatment with my local student partner and supervisor. One memorable case involved a man with eye pain and a foreign body sensation. We diagnosed a rust ring, removed it, and prescribed a bandage contact lens. I still remember the big smile and thankful heart of the patient. He was relieved since the problem bothered him for days and he could not figure it out until the clinic visit. A relieved smile and patient trust truly motivate me to be an optometrist.

I am grateful for this opportunity. It broadened my horizons, exposed me to more ocular conditions, and improved my clinical skills. I strongly recommend this opportunity to other students.
