Mr. Dino Lui

Outstanding Student Mentor 2023

Biography

Mr. Dino Lui is Director and General Manager, Ramp and Cargo Services of Jardine Aviation Services. His proposer, Mr. Christopher Chen, currently a year-2 student majoring in Smart Tourism and Hospitality stated in his nomination:

When I first met Mr. Lui, I found him easy-going and warm, just like an old friend. He shared all the things I want to know, from career paths to lifetime experience … When I was unsure of my career path, Mr. Lui  was kind enough to offer me advice. He advised me to set both short-term and long-term objectives for myself. I found myself interested in the airport industry, and I would like to work as an airport ground crew. Mr. Lui managed to lead me two site visit tours to Hong Kong International Airport. During the site visit, I had the chance to stand closely behind the airport staff and observe the entire departure check-in procedure.

Regarding the mentorship scheme, Mr. Lui stated that he and the students might both benefit from it. For me, I would have deeper understanding towards the airport industry I am dreaming for.  Mr. Lui would converse with us, share information, and get some fresh perspectives from the younger generation. Meeting Mr. Lui from the SHTM Mentorship Programme makes me pleased and grateful. In the near future, I'm looking forward to interacting with Mr. Lui  more and more.

…  During our conversation,  I have shared our personal objectives and career aspirations, and received some advice from Mr. Lui  meanwhile. Furthermore, Mr. Lui  has shared three topics namely (1) Agility, (2) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and (3) Communication skill with me. They are important to the growth of our mindset.

Mr. Lui managed to lead me on a site visit tour to Airport Restricted Area at the Hong Kong International Airport, we had lunch together at the HKIA Community Building after that. The first location we visited was the check-in counter, where we stood closely behind the airport staff to observe the entire departure check-in procedure. Airport ground personnel must familiarize themselves with check-in systems and computer code input while attending to passengers, which requires a high level of ICT and hospitality skills. I have applied to the airport ground crew internship programme for the summer and expect to gain more practical experience by working at the airport's front lines.

The second location we visited was the baggage handling areas, which can process thousands of luggage per hour. The baggage handling system would first assign baggage to various flights, and then scan the barcodes to match each bag to its designated area. The cargo would then undergo additional security checks, such as X-ray, CT tomography, trace detection, and manual unpacking inspection. I really admire the ramp operative loading and unloading heavy baggage, because there are no air-conditioners outdoors and it is particular difficult to bear up against the summertime heat.

We made our third stop at the JASL office at HKIA, where I observed some middle and back office personnel. Mr. Lui introduced me to aircraft load controllers, who are in charge of pre-flight preparation and the compilation of accurate load sheets for flights. To ensure a safe and fuel-efficient operation, aircraft load controllers have to determine how and where to load cargo and baggage into the aircraft. I observed the professionalism of aircraft load controllers, who are sensitive to figures and detail-minded, and really appreciate their work.

With the intention of transforming HKIA into a smart airport and maintaining its position as one of the world's foremost airports, HKIA has made a concerted effort to develop and implement innovative solutions. Mr. Lui introduced me to Flight Token, a newly developed technology application that enables passengers to experience a seamless departure voyage at HKIA, thereby enhancing customer experiences. Flight Token is a self-service biometric identification system that enables passengers to display their faces instead of their travel documents and boarding passes. Passengers can choose to use smart check-in Kiosks, self luggage drop counters, e-Security Gates, Flight Token e-Channels, and e-Boarding Gates when departing from HKIA today.

Mr. Lui invited me to join him and Mrs. LUI for yum cha at HKIA Community Building following our tour of the Airport Restricted Area. Mrs. LUI formerly served as ground staff for British Airways and met Mr. Lui at the airport. In addition to life sharing, we also discussed the future expansion of HKIA, including the construction of new taxiways, a runway, and a terminal facility. The exchange of ideas and information with Mr. and Mrs. Lui has been incredibly beneficial to me.

Having met with Mr. Lui  multiple times, my interest in working at HKIA has grown. To further enhance my mentorship experience, I asked if I could work for Mr. Lui’s company, and finally I was offered the position of part-time passenger services officer at JASL. The main duties and responsibilities include providing passenger services at check-in counters and boarding gates. From my working experience as a passenger services officer, I have had a lot of direct interactions with passengers and realise the hard work of being the front-line staff. Another important thing I learned from working at JASL is that safety always comes first. Jardine Aviation Academy offered some courses to provide quality, customised aviation training. For example, I took the Dangerous Goods Awareness Course and Occupational Health, Safety, and Security Induction Training, which are essential to learn by heart. I feel a strong sense of responsibility working at HKIA because I am one of the dedicated citizens guarding the airport and our homeland.

I am grateful to have met Mr. Lui through my remarkable SHTM Mentorship Programme experience. About one year ago, I had just a small amount of cognition about the working environment at HKIA. However, Mr. Lui led me and guided me to know the ropes and understand the operations. Although the one-year programme is about to end, the relationship between Mr. Lui and me has built up. I would like to express my deep gratitude to Mr. Lui for his passion and commitment to continuous learning, which have inspired me to strive for a better me. There is much more knowledge for me to learn from Mr. Lui, and I am looking forward to continuing my connection with him!”
