The SHTM invites applications for admission in 2026/2027 under the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) and Ph.D. Scholarship scheme. Successful applicants will receive a competitive scholarship package to support their studies.
We welcome outstanding Ph.D. applications from all countries and backgrounds. Our current Ph.D. students hail from different parts of the world, including Canada, Ethiopia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Iran, Korea,
Macau, Mainland China, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Peru, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and the United Kingdom. SHTM Ph.D. graduates have received international scholarly recognition and now hold positions at renowned universities and other academic institutions worldwide, including the University of Central Florida, University of Delaware, EHL Hospitality Business School, Griffith University, University of South Australia, Sun Yat-sen University, University of Surrey, and Texas A&M University.

main areas of Ph.D. research at the SHTM are available
here. The School gives priority to proposed research topics in the following four broad areas of focus:
- Smart tourism (for example, artificial intelligence, robotics, technological innovation, branding, marketing, experience management, and customer engagement)
- Performance measurement and management (for example, financial and revenue management and measurement, operational management, service management, and event management)
- Future of tourism and forecasting (for example, demand forecasting and emerging products and markets)
- Policy and planning (for example, public policy and tourism planning and development)
We also offer a dual-award Ph.D. programme in collaboration with the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the University of Surrey. The programme leads to dual awards from these two world-leading institutions. New Ph.D. students will be jointly
admitted on a full-time basis and registered with both institutions from the start of their studies. They will be jointly supervised by expert scholars from both institutions and will spend at least 18 months at each university. Students are required to complete one research project each to fulfil the degree requirements of both institutions.
