ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Three teams of SHTM students participated in the STR Student Market Study Competition held virtually on 4 November 2022.
  • The team composed of D.HTM student Mr Robin Ning, MSc student in International Hospitality Management Ms Ive Ip, and BSc student in Hotel Management Mr Anthony Liu, under the guidance of Mr Jason Kelly, Dr Clare Fung and Mr Chris Chan, took third place in the Asia-Pacific Edition.
  • The team composed of graduate students: D.HTM students Mr Robin Ning and Ms Sophie Zhou, and Ph.D. student Ms Olive Nyaga, under the guidance of Dr Sung Gyun Mun, Dr Nicholas Thomas and Dr Mahlagha Darvish Motevali, was selected as a finalist in the Global Graduate Edition.
  • The team composed of undergraduate students: BSc student in Tourism and Events Management Miss Vicky Dai, BSc students in Hotel Management Mr Anthony Liu and Miss Missy Zou, under the guidance of Ms Tiffany Cheng, Dr Nicholas Thomas and Mr Chris Chan, was selected as a finalist in the Global Undergraduate Edition.
Mr Jason Kelly has been appointed member of the Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals' Certified Hospitality Technology Professional (CHTP) and Certified Hospitality Accounting Executive (CHAE) Certification Advisory Councils with effect from 1 February 2023.
Professor Kaye Chon signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mr Jerome Qiu, Chief Operating Officer, Greater China of InterContinental Hotels Group (Shanghai) Ltd, on 28 February 2023, which will pave the way for a mutually beneficial industry partnership. An eight-member delegation from InterContinental Hotels Group (Shanghai) Ltd visited the SHTM and Hotel ICON, comprising Ms Ying Ying Koh, Vice President, Human Resources – Greater China; Ms Maggie Zheng, Head of HR, Growth, Employer Branding & Early Careers – Greater China; Mr Michael Hoe Knudsen, Vice President, Operations – South & West China, Hong Kong, Macau & Taiwan; Ms Xi Ying, Senior Director, HR Operations – South & West China, Hong Kong, Macau & Taiwan; Ms Katy Fok, Director of HR, Regent Hong Kong; Ms Anno So, Director of HR, Crowne Plaza Hong Kong Kowloon East; and Mr Sean Shao, Senior Manager, Early Careers & Employer Branding – Greater China.
Sixteen SHTM faculty and staff members, namely Professor Basak Denizci Guillet, Professor Jinsoo Lee, Dr Mimi Li, Dr Barry Mak, Dr Qu Xiao, Dr Loretta Pang, Ms Pauline Ngan, Ms Katrina Li, Ms Annabel Chan, Ms Leslie Fung, Miss Maggie Ng, Mr Enoch Tai, Ms Kelly Wang, Mr Dick Wong, Ms Andie Yee and Ms Stella Kong, were honoured by PolyU with Long Service Awards in recognition of their many years of loyal and dedicated service to the institution.
Miss Lian Chan, a final-year student in the BSc in Tourism & Events Management programme, received the Outstanding Student Award, School of Hotel and Tourism Management 2022 at the Presentation Ceremony for the Outstanding Student Award & Presidential Student Leadership Award 2022 on 20 March 2023. Outstanding Student Awards are granted annually to full-time final-year students who excel in both academic and non-academic pursuits during their studies.
At the same ceremony, Mr Anthony Liu, a final-year student in the BSc in Hotel Management programme, received the Presidential Student Leadership Award, School of Hotel and Tourism Management 2022. Presidential Student Leadership Awards affirm the excellent leadership performance of students and their relentless passion for serving the community.
Dr Faye Hao successfully obtained research funding from PolyU for a collaborative research project entitled "Multi-Modal Multi-Label Tourism Statistics Inferring from Publicly Available Geo-Social Footprint Data" with the research team at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The co-investigators from PolyU include Professor Kaye Chon and Professor Haiyan Song from the SHTM and Professor Qing Li and Dr Chen Zhang from the Department of Computing.
