The prestigious SHTM Lifetime Achievement Award was announced at the same gala dinner hosted by the SHTM on 20 September 2019. Mr P. R. S. Oberoi, Executive Chairman of EIH Limited, the flagship company of The Oberoi Group, received the honour.

The award was presented to Mr Oberoi, now 90 years old, at a ceremony held in Delhi, India in August by Dr K. P. Ho, Immediate Past Chairman of the SHTM Advisory Committee and Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings. Mr Oberoi was represented at the ceremony by his son Mr Vikram Oberoi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of EIH Limited.

Over the years, Mr Oberoi has made immense contributions to the international hotel sector, continuously redefining standards for hospitality and luxury. In addition to leading the management of luxury hotels in several countries, he has been instrumental in pioneering the development of new Oberoi hotels and resorts. Under his leadership, the Oberoi brand has come to represent fine luxury hotels.

Mr Oberoi is credited with placing Oberoi hotels on the international luxury travel map by opening several new luxury hotels in important locations. These hotels were designed to closely reflect their environments, setting new standards for architecture and design in luxury hospitality.

It is Mr Oberoi's firm belief that people are the most valuable asset of any organisation. Recognising the importance of quality to hospitality management, Mr Oberoi established the Oberoi Centre of Learning and Development in New Delhi in 1966. Today, this institution is considered amongst the best of its kind in Asia.

Under Mr Oberoi's leadership, Oberoi Hotels and Resorts has received numerous international awards. Throughout his career, Mr Oberoi has himself received many honours and accolades from countries across the globe, such as Germany, France and Morocco. His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco personally appointed Mr Oberoi Grand Officer of the Order of the Al-Alaoui Wissam, the second highest award in Morocco. Mr Oberoi was also honoured with the first Hall of Fame Award at the Hotel Investment Forum India, and received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honour, in recognition of his exceptional service to the country.

As a member of the World Wide Fund for Nature, Mr Oberoi is committed to the conservation of the environment.

Expressing his heartfelt congratulations to Mr Oberoi on receiving the SHTM Lifetime Achievement Award, Professor Kaye Chon, SHTM Dean, Chair Professor and Walter Kwok Foundation Professor in International Hospitality Management, said that the SHTM has successfully established itself as a world-class centre of hospitality and tourism education and research over 40 years of impressive achievements. The School's commitment to excellence is well supported by distinguished individuals such as Mr Oberoi. Looking ahead, added Professor Chon, the SHTM will continue to strive to extend the frontier of knowledge in hospitality and tourism and play a leading role in nurturing talents for the advancement of the entire industry.

The SHTM Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2016 to honour outstanding persons who have contributed substantially to the development of hospitality and tourism in Hong Kong, the region and around the world. In bestowing the award, the SHTM seeks to recognise true leaders who help define the global hospitality landscape and advance the industry. It is difficult to think of a more deserving recipient than Mr Oberoi.
