ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Professor Kaye Chon, Professor Brian King, Dr Barry Mak, Dr Karin Weber and Dr Tony Tse won the Grand Award in the Business Excellence category of the PolyU Distinguished Knowledge Transfer Awards 2017, for their project "Development of New Academic Programmes in Travel and Tourism Management for King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia". The goal of the PolyU Distinguished Knowledge Transfer Awards is to encourage colleagues to advance knowledge and provide high impact services for accelerating the innovation and technological development of the region and beyond. This year's presentation ceremony was held on 5 June.
Professor Rob Law and Dr Markus Schuckert received the Best Paper Award of the Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research for 2016 for their co-authored paper "Insights into Suspicious Online Ratings: Direct Evidence from TripAdvisor" at the 23rd Asia Pacific Tourism Association Annual Conference in Busan, Korea on 18-21 June 2017.
At the same conference, Professor Brian King and D.HTM student Ms Sienny Thio were named Runners-up in the annual conference Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper "Hotel Employee Work Values".
Dr Sam Kim received an Award for Highly Commended Paper in the 2017 Emerald Literati Awards for Excellence for his co-authored paper entitled "Analysis of Satisfiers and Dissatisfiers in Online Hotel Reviews on Social Media".
Mr Raymond Adongo, a research student in the Doctor of Philosophy in Hotel and Tourism Management programme received the Young Scientist Award based on his paper "Stakeholder Relationships in Local Festivals" at the 7th International Conference on Tourism in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 28 June - 1 July 2017.
Professor Kaye Chon was honoured with the 2017 ICHRIE McCool Breakthrough Award for founding the Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism. The award was presented at the 2017 Annual ICHRIE Summer Conference & Marketplace in Baltimore, Maryland, USA on 26-28 July 2017.
Two D.HTM students Ms Sienny Thio and Mr Bu Nai-peng, Tom received The Padma and Hari Harilela Scholarships 2016/17. The scholarships were established in 2011 by Dr Hari N. Harilela, head of the Harilela Group, which plays a significant role in the professional development of the hotel industry.
