ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
The SHTM and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) recently collaborated to produce the PATA Asia Pacific Visitor Forecasts Report 2017-2021. The Report, published annually, is an important industry reference for the 39 destinations covered, with forecasts differing only 1% from actual visitor arrivals in recent years.
An Initiation Ceremony for the PolyU Chapter of Eta Sigma Delta (ESD) took place at the SHTM on 20 April 2017. Led by Miss Kristina Braun, Chapter President, 16 SHTM students became ESD members in testimony to their outstanding academic achievements. Mr Mark Conklin, General Manager of JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong, addressed the ceremony and shared his valuable experience of leadership in the hospitality industry with the new members.
Launching the 13th Session of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management Students' Association (SHTMSA) with the team name "Gracious" on 2 May 2017, the SHTMSA executive committee took the oath to serve members with sincerity and courtesy. Mr Martin Li, a Year One student in the School's Broad Discipline of Hotel and Tourism Management programme, will be leading the 12-member executive committee until 28 February 2018. The committee's intention is to act out the theme of the inauguration ceremony - "Perpetual Bravery, Measureless Tenacity". Guests of honour at the ceremony were Mr Raul Canseco, former Vice President of Peru and Chairman (Founder) of University of San Ignacio de Loyola, Dr Jennifer Cronin, President of Marco Polo Hotels and Chairman of the SHTM Industry Advisory Committee, and Mr Victor Chan, Immediate Past Chairman of the Hong Kong Hotels Association, General Manager of The Kowloon Hotel and a distinguished SHTM alum.
Miss Michelle Au-Yueng, a 2016 graduate in the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Hotel Management programme, won 2nd place in the Young Talents Award based on her thesis entitled "The Antecedents of Brand Prestige in Affordable Luxury Hotels" at the Young Talent Program of the 5th World Tourism Forum in Lucerne, Switzerland on 4-5 May 2017.
Miss Scarlett Chan, Miss Esther Lee, Miss Lydia Ng, Miss Pavithra Senevirathne, Mr Michael Tse and Miss Amanda Wantono, Year 2 students in the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Hotel Management programme, signed on to become the latest batch of Elite Management Trainees at Hotel ICON on 8 May 2017. Representing the brightest and most promising SHTM students, they will undergo vigorous training for 11 months to gain the experience needed to work as supervisors or managers upon graduation.
Dr Eric Chan's article entitled "Co-creation and Higher Order Customer Engagement in Hospitality and Tourism Services" published in International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management has been chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2017. The article was co-authored with Professor Chathoth of American University of Sharjah, Professor Ungson of San Francisco State University and Professor Harrington of University of Arkansas.
