Anti-scam Seminar for Mainland Students in Hong Kong

With deceptive organisations and fraudulent schemes on the rise and an increase in the number of cases targeting Mainland university students studying in Hong Kong, the Police Anti-Deception Coordination Centre (ADCC), the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR (LOCPG) and PolyU held a “Beware of Scams! Join Us to Combat Deceptions” seminar at the Jockey Club Auditorium of PolyU to strengthen students’ awareness in this regard. 

The seminar was attended by Mr Siu Chak-yee, the Commissioner of Police; Mr Chen Feng, the Director-General of the Police Liaison Department of the LOCPG ; Mr Wang Weiming, the Director-General of Education, Science and Technology Department of LOCPG; and Professor Jin-Guang Teng, PolyU President. During the seminar, the attendees were given prevention advice on various fraud techniques, such as telephone deception tricks, defrauding schemes, employment fraud ploys, naked chat scams and money laundering traps. After the seminar, information booths were set up by ADCC, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau, the Financial Intelligence and Investigation Bureau (FIIB), the Public Relations Wing and Regional Crime Prevention Units to provide a face-to-face consultation service and distribute anti-deception publicity materials.

Around 1,000 Mainland students from 14 tertiary institutions attending the seminar would be appointed as 'Anti-Scam Ambassadors' to assist the Police in disseminating anti-deception messages to their schoolmates and friends.
