LO Wai Ting

I began my PhD studies in 2017 and my long-term career goal is to become a world-class scientist specialising in fall prevention/management and lower-limb biomechanics. RS has a diverse and strong academic culture with a thirst for knowledge and research, providing a wonderful environment for me to achieve my goal. It offers comprehensive and high-quality programmes that lead to educational qualifications recognised by academics worldwide. Its strong research infrastructure and abundant resources also support researchers in developing their sustainable research.

The objective of my research is to determine the feasibility of a 12-week community-based post-TKA multimodal Tai Chi programme in improving balance and physical functioning in post-TKA patients as compared to usual postoperative care. Since routine postoperative outpatient physiotherapy or rehabilitation service is not always offered to patients after TKA, it is essential to explore alternative rehabilitation strategies to enhance lower-limb muscular strength, improve balance, and reduce trip/fall incidences in patients following TKA. The output of this research could be an essential first step to help clinicians develop an evidence-based fall-prevention programme for patients with TKA. The project will have great potential for reducing the rate of falls and fall-related expenses in post-TKA patients worldwide.
