Summary

Offshore floating wind turbines (OFWTs) exhibit complex coupled aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, structural, and soil dynamics. However, current design codes rely heavily on outdated marine data and oversimplified foundation models. Simultaneously, climate change accelerates rising sea levels and intensifies tropical cyclones, posing unprecedented structural risks to existing and future turbines.

In this research salon, Prof. ZHU will present the first annual progress of his project that aims to construct advanced, integrated OFWT models to realise comprehensive dynamic coupling analysis, intelligent risk assessment, and climate-adaptive design optimisation under severe typhoons.

Ultimately, this research will enhance turbine resilience against extreme weather, safeguard long-term structural integrity, and accelerate the safe, cost-effective deployment of next-generation offshore renewable energy.
