Summary
Rapid urban expansion and renewal across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area are transforming landscapes through dense infrastructural development. However, replacing low-rise structures with high-rise buildings alters local microclimates and disrupts airflow patterns. This creates ventilation barriers that trap harmful air pollutants, escalating public health risks under ongoing climate change.
In this research salon, Prof. GUO will present the first annual progress of his project that aims to assess the complex impacts of urban construction on air quality, atmospheric chemistry, and respiratory health using advanced multi-scale modeling and field measurements.
Ultimately, the project will deliver actionable, evidence-based urban planning strategies to balance growth with environmental sustainability, fostering healthier, more livable cities.
