On the morning of 23 September 2026, a delegation from the Shanghai sports sector visited the Research Institute for Sports Science and Technology (RISports) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The two sides held friendly exchanges and explored opportunities for collaboration in academic exchange and research.
The delegation was led by Lu Lin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau. Members included Ren Limin, Principal of Shanghai Second Sports School (Shanghai Sports Centre); Zhao Defeng, Director and Researcher of the Physical Fitness Research and Health Guidance Centre, Shanghai Research Institute of Sports Science; Zhang Ling and Chen Yunxia, rowers and Olympic champions from the Shanghai Competitive Sports Training Management Centre; Xiao Zhuhao, Coordinator of the General Office, Shanghai Competitive Sports Training Management Centre, Deputy Secretary of the Youth League Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Sports Bureau, and Head of the Shanghai Sports Lecture Group; and Ma Xiaoyang, staff member of the General Office, Shanghai Science and Technology Sports Management Centre.
During the meeting, both sides discussed potential collaboration in academic areas such as student exchange, as well as joint research initiatives. The delegation introduced schemes allowing athletes to undertake work or internships outside mainland China for professional development, international exposure, and cross-border talent exchange emphasised the importance of research and personnel exchange. They also shared the latest developments in brain-computer interface (BCI) technology and its clinical applications in Shanghai hospitals.
RISports introduced its current research projects, including 3D-printed basketballs and functional insoles, among other innovations. Following the discussions, the representatives were invited to tour the RISports laboratories and view the equipment used for research purposes.
The visit further strengthened ties between the Shanghai sports community and PolyU RISports, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation in elite sports, sports research, and sports innovation.
