Prof. Arnold WONG, Associate Director of Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), Associate Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Programme Leader of BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy and a registered physiotherapist, recently shared his insights on the use of Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) technology for health management in an interview with Ming Pao Daily News.

Prof. Wong advised senior citizens to pay attention to muscle composition charts provided by BIA devices. He highlighted that severe muscle imbalances between the left and right sides of the body, particularly in the lower limbs might increase the risk of falls. He also clarified that although some BIA devices could estimate skeletal muscle index (SMI), a diagnosis of sarcopenia requires additional assessments including grip strength and walking speed tests.
