COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft holds first academic committee meeting

The COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA) held its inaugural Academic Committee Meeting at the PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute on 11 November 2025.  The meeting brought together experts from The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) to review project guidelines and provide strategic guidance for RILA's development. The Committee evaluated multiple research initiatives across three key areas: intelligent design, precision manufacturing, and operation and maintenance. Following comprehensive discussions, the Committee approved several project guidelines to advance innovation in large-aircraft technology. The approved guidelines will be funded based on available resources and strategic priorities. The meeting marks an important step toward strengthening collaboration between COMAC and PolyU and advancing research excellence in China's large aircraft. 中國商飛-香港理工大學大飛機研究院成功召開首次學術委員會會議 中國商飛-香港理工大學大飛機研究院於2025年11月11日在香港理工大學深圳研究院成功召開了首次學術委員會會議。 會議匯聚了來自中國商飛(商飛)及香港理工大學(理大)的專家學者,就研究項目指南進行評審,並為研究院的發展提供戰略指導。學術委員會評審了涵蓋智能設計、精密加工與製造及運行與維護三個方向的多項研究計劃。經過深入討論,委員會批准了多個推動大飛機技術創新的研究項目指南。獲批指南將根據資源配置及戰略優先順序獲得資助。會議標誌著商飛及理大在中國大飛機研究領域的合作邁向新階段。

PolyU delegation participated the 8th COMAC International Science and Innovation Week

The 8th Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) International Science and Technology Innovation Week, themed “Sky Link: Sustainable Aviation for the Future,” was launched at the Beijing Civil Aircraft Technology Research Center of COMAC on 8 September 2025. This year, the focus was on new-energy aircraft, artificial intelligence, the low-altitude economy, and the transformation of the air transport system. It brought together over 500 experts and stakeholders from government, academia, industry, research institutes, and industry associations across nine countries and regions. A delegation from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) participated in this event, including Professor Chih-Yung WEN, Chair Professor of Aeronautical Engineering and Director of the COMAC–PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft (RILA); Professor Siyang ZHONG, Assistant Professor in the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering; as well as representatives from the PolyU Research and Innovation Office (RIO) and RILA. PolyU delegation took part in the opening ceremony, the SciTech and Young Talent Forum, and thematic seminars such as the Low‑Altitude Economy seminar, engaging in in‑depth discussions with representatives from leading institutions, including Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Khalifa University, Beijing Institute of Technology, and the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, exploring opportunities for future collaboration.   第八屆COMAC國際科技創新周 以「Sky Link:面向未來的可持續航空」為主題的第八屆COMAC國際科技創新周,於9月8日在中國商用飛機有限責任公司(中國商飛)北京民用飛機技術研究中心開幕,聚焦新能源飛機、人工智能、低空經濟、航空運輸體系變革等專題,吸引來自各國家和地區政府、高校、企業、科研院所、客戶、行業協會等合作單位逾500名專家學者參與。   香港理工大學(理大)航空及民航工程學系航空工程講座教授 、中國商飛 –香港理工大學大飛機研究院(大飛機研究院)院長溫志湧教授,航空及民航工程學系助理教授鍾思陽教授 ,理大研究及創新事務處代表和大飛機研究院等代表受邀出席COMAC國際科技創新周,並在開幕式、科技創新與青年人才論壇、低空經濟主題研討會等專題活動現場,與西班牙馬德里理工大學、阿聯酋哈利法大學、北京理工大學、中國航空學會等機構代表深入交流,探討未來合作機遇。

PolyU and COMAC sign agreement to establish Research Institute for Large Aircraft

On November 12, 2024, at the 15th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) signed an agreement to jointly establish the COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft. The COMAC-PolyU Research Institute for Large Aircraft aims to promote the development of the large aircraft industry. Leveraging the academic strengths of PolyU and Hong Kong’s technological innovation resources, the Research Institute will focus on key tasks such as tackling challenges in domestically-produced commercial aircraft technology and exploring future new technologies. PolyU and COMAC co-organise International Science and Technology Innovation Week and collaborate on advancing aviation research

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Ltd. (COMAC) co-organised for the first time an international innovation week and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advancing civil aviation technology. With the theme of “Digital Aircraft: Industry Empowerment,” the 6th COMAC International Science and Technology Innovation Week was co-organised by COMAC, PolyU and Tongji University and held in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province to promote collaboration on innovations. Over 500 experts and scholars from government, academia, research institutions and industry attended the week-long event that ended today. They exchanged ideas on basic as well as frontier science and technology in areas such as aviation Big Data, artificial intelligence and advanced materials. PolyU and COMAC also signed an MoU to promote technological innovation in civil aviation. Both sides will collaborate on research, talent development and knowledge transfer in the areas of artificial intelligence, Big Data and new materials. The MoU was signed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU, and Mr TAN Wangeng, Director and Deputy Party Secretary of COMAC. Prof. Christopher Chao said, “This collaboration aims to inject new impetus into the development of civil aviation and related fields, while jointly promoting technological innovation and industrial development. PolyU will join hands with COMAC to create more opportunities for exchange between academia and industry.” Mr HE Dongfeng, Chairman and Party Secretary of COMAC, said at the event, “Promoting an ecosystem to foster collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions is important for the development needs of commercial airliners and is demanded by technological trends. In light of the new wave of technological revolution, we need to establish an innovation chain for airliner development supported by talents, innovation, and partnerships between industry and academia.” At the event, leading PolyU scholars met with industry professionals and shared their insights on cutting-edge technologies and development trends in civil aviation. Among them were Prof. H.C. MAN, Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Chair Professor of Materials Engineering; Prof. Chih-Yung WEN, Head of Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering and Chair Professor of Aeronautical Engineering; and Prof. CAO Jiannong, Director of Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Things and Chair Professor of Distributed and Mobile Computing. Prof. Wen also delivered a keynote speech at the opening of the event. COMAC, headquartered in Shanghai, is engaged in the research, manufacturing and flight testing of civil aircraft and related products, with the mission of implementing large-scale passenger aircraft programmes and realising the industrialisation of civil aircraft in China. PolyU’s Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering is ranked number 1 in Hong Kong by ShanghaiRanking. It plays a crucial role in bridging research and industrial needs in the aviation and aeronautics field. In addition, the Aviation Services Research Centre (ASRC) is an applied research centre founded by PolyU and Boeing Company. It aims to develop new or improved aviation service technologies applicable to the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry and beyond. 理大與中國商飛簽署大飛機研究院共建協定  香港理工大學(理大) 與中國商用飛機有限責任公司(中國商飛)首次合辦國際科技創新周並簽署合作備忘錄,共同促進民用航空科技的產學研合作。 以「數字飛機 、 產業賦能」為主題的第六屆 COMAC 國際科技創新周,由中國商飛聯同理大及同濟大學聯合主辦。為期一周的活動,聚焦航空大數據、人工智能、先進材料等領域,吸引超過 500 名來自政府、學界、科研院所及業界的專家和學者,親臨浙江省嘉興市參與,就相關的基礎科學和前沿科技交流,促進創新合作。活動今日完滿舉行。 理大並與中國商飛在創新周活動上簽署合作備忘錄。雙方將聚焦人工智能、大數據和新材料等領域,在技術研發、人才培養、科技成果轉化等方面,開展廣泛和深入的合作,推動民用航空及相關科技創新發展。合作備忘錄由理大副校長(研究及創新)趙汝恒教授及中國商飛公司黨委副書記、董事譚萬庚先生代表簽署。 趙汝恒教授說:「理大透過與中國商飛合作,將會為學術界和工業界提供更多交流機會,為民用航空及相關領域的發展注入新的動力,共同推動科技創新和產業發展。」 中國商飛黨委書記、董事長賀東風先生在活動上說:「推動數字飛機產學研生態構建,既符合技術趨勢,又契合大飛機實際。面對新一輪科技革命,必須依靠人才引領、科技創新、產教融合,貫通大飛機的創新鏈。」 活動期間,理大工程學院院長兼材料工程講座教授文効忠教授、航空及民航工程學系系主任兼民航工程講座教授溫志湧教授,以及人工智能與物聯網研究院主任、電子計算學系分佈式與移動計算講座教授曹建農教授等,與來自各地的專家學者和企業代表,探討民用航空及相關領域的前沿技術和發展趨勢。溫教授並於開幕禮上發表專題演講。 總部設在上海的中國商飛主要從事民用飛機及相關產品的科研、生產、試驗試飛等業務,包括推動國家大型飛機重大專項和中大型客機項目。 理大的航空及航天工程學系在香港排名第一,為航空和航天領域的創新研究與行業需求之間,擔當重要的橋樑角色。此外,航空服務研究中心(ASRC)是由理大和波音公司設立的應用研究中心,為 MRO(維護、修理和檢修)和相關領域,開發創新科技和改進航空服務技術。   Reposted from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University [Original post]
