Interdisciplinary innovation: Prof. Jeffrey LEUNG discusses myopia prevention and vision screening technology for children

Prof. Jeffrey LEUNG Tsz Wing, Member of the Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV) and Assistant Professor of the School of Optometry at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was recently interviewed on RTHK’s programme “Infinite Future”, where he shared recent findings in research on children’s vision and discussed the value of interdisciplinary learning in scientific research.   Prof. Leung employs animal models to examine the effects of environmental factors on eyesight and ocular development. He noted that, in experiments with chicks, external environmental influences such as artificially induced myopia or astigmatic lenses can trigger self-adjustment of refractive power in the chicks’ eyes, demonstrating a close relationship between visual signals and changes in myopia and astigmatism. Research has further revealed that localised visual blur can also affect eye growth, providing additional insight into how everyday environments, such as reading and outdoor activities, influence the growth of children’s eyes.   In addition, Prof. Leung’s team has developed a mobile application, Myopia Intelligent Tele-Triage system (MITTs), to assist parents in conducting preliminary vision screening at home. The app utilises artificial intelligence technology to record prescription data and generate progress reports, and provides information on myopia control, enabling parents to proactively monitor and address their children’s vision issues at an early stage.   Prof. Leung emphasised that scientific research requires curiosity and an interdisciplinary spirit, integrating clinical practice, fundamental research and technology to drive medical innovation. PolyU launches next-generation ophthalmic AI clinical co-pilot system, driving innovation in clinical-grade intelligent decision support platforms

A research team led by Prof. HE Mingguang, Director of Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RISV), Chair Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology and Henry G. Leong Professor in Elderly Vision Health of School of Optometry, has launched the development of a next-generation clinical-grade ophthalmic artificial intelligence (AI) co-pilot system “EyeAgent 2.0”, aiming to construct an intelligent decision support platform with advanced clinical reasoning capabilities to assist doctors in disease diagnostic analysis, treatment planning and follow-up management, thereby improving the quality and efficiency of clinical judgments. The team previously developed the “EyeAgent 1.0” prototype system, capable of integrating multimodal medical data including clinical text and images, to provide diagnostic assistance. Pilot testing in hospitals across Hong Kong and Chinese mainland yielded positive clinical feedback. Leveraging this, the team is now developing “EyeAgent 2.0”. The new system is being developed around a domain-specific foundation model trained on large-scale, real-world multimodal electronic medical data from leading ophthalmic centres across different regions. It will integrate fundus imaging, optical coherence tomography, angiography and clinical text data. The system will also simulate actual clinical workflows, including data integration, differential diagnosis, treatment planning, and disease progression prediction through a multi-agent collaborative framework, realising the goal of upgrading from one-time image analysis towards continuous decision support throughout the course of disease. Based on current model validation and prototype testing results, the team anticipates that when fully developed the system, will significantly enhance diagnostic consistency and efficiency, while reducing the time doctors spend on case organisation and documentation. This will help alleviate work pressure in high-load clinical environments. The system’s design emphasises human-AI collaboration, with AI serving as an auxiliary tool for enhancing data integration and analytical capabilities while all final clinical decisions remain doctor-led.  

PolyU RCSV partners with Aravind Eye Care System to develop “EyeAgent” AI platform for ophthalmology

The PolyU Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Aravind Eye Care System (AECS), India, to co-develop and clinically validate EyeAgent, an innovative AI-powered clinical decision-support platform for ophthalmology. Developed by RCSV, EyeAgent integrates large language models with validated ophthalmic tools and domain expertise.  Designed to emulate clinician reasoning, it coordinates multimodal analyses and generates transparent, evidence-based outputs to support diagnosis, triage, and management planning. A signing ceremony was held on 5 February 2026 on the PolyU campus, bringing together leading figures in ophthalmology, optometry, AI, and digital health.  Signatories included Prof. HE Mingguang, Director of RCSV and Chair Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology at PolyU, and Dr R. KIM, Chief Medical Officer of AECS, with witnesses from both institutions. Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. He highlighted PolyU’s longstanding strength in vision science and its drive to translate AI innovation into practical healthcare solutions: “At RCSV, we are committed to advancing innovative vision research and translating artificial intelligence technologies into impactful clinical solutions.  Together with the School of Optometry at PolyU, a leading centre for vision science, clinical training and eye care research, we aim to integrate cutting-edge AI with strong clinical foundations.” Building on this shared vision, Dr Kim stressed Aravind’s commitment to leveraging technology as a force for equitable eye care: “At Aravind, we believe that technology, particularly artificial intelligence, has a vital role to play in expanding equitable access to high-quality eye care.  We are encouraged by the innovative approach from the School of Optometry and RCSV at PolyU in developing EyeAgent and are pleased to support its refinement and broader implementation.” This collaboration has the potential to meaningfully strengthen clinical practice and improve outcomes for patients, especially in low- and middle-income countries where access to specialist expertise remains limited.  By combining PolyU’s leadership in AI innovation with Aravind’s extensive clinical network, the partnership aims to deliver a globally adaptable AI-assisted system that enhances diagnostic efficiency, clinician confidence, and patient outcomes.   

PolyU Research Centre for SHARP Vision collaborates with Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital to develop national guidelines for myopia management in children

The PolyU Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV) has entered into partnership with the Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, Vietnam, to jointly address the increasing prevalence of myopia among Vietnamese children and adolescents.  The international collaboration aims to develop the National Myopia Management Guidelines for Children, which sets out evidence-based strategies for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of childhood myopia, with a view to ensuring a healthier future for Vietnam’s younger generations.   A consensus meeting was held in Ho Chi Minh City on 9 September 2025, bringing together a distinguished group of healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and representatives from leading NGOs to witness the significant milestone.  At the meeting, experts explored critical areas in childhood myopia management to be addressed in the comprehensive guidelines, including advanced interventions to slow myopia progression, early detection and screening for at-risk children, and evidence-based prevention strategies.  In addition, Prof. HE Mingguang, Director of RCSV, Chair Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology and Henry G. Leong Professor in Elderly Vision Health, and Dr Le Anh TUAN, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, signed an Memorandum of Understanding, marking the two sides’ commitment to fostering international collaboration to advance child eye health. The development of the National Myopia Management Consensus Guidelines for Children is a collaborative effort led by Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, the Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology, and the Vietnam Ophthalmological Society, in partnership with RCSV.  The initiative also benefited from the participation of international experts from PolyU and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The initiative aims to: Standardise clinical practices for myopia management, ensuring consistent, high-quality care across Vietnam. Promote school and community-based health policies to detect and prevent myopia in children. Enhance training and knowledge-sharing for healthcare professionals to implement the latest evidence-based treatments. Foster international cooperation to exchange expertise, resources, and research for long-term impact. This collaboration highlights Vietnam’s dedication to leveraging international expertise and evidence-based practices to address the growing public health challenge of myopia.  By prioritising prevention and early intervention, the guidelines aim to significantly improve children’s vision and overall quality of life.  RCSV will continue to create knowledge and solutions for the promotion of healthy life-long sharp vision.

Prof. HE Mingguang featured in Wen Wei Po on pioneering ophthalmology technologies

Prof. HE Mingguang, Director of Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV), Chair Professor of Experimental Ophthalmology and Henry G. Leong Professor in Elderly Vision Health, was interviewed by Wen Wei Po to discuss two ground-breaking studies he leads. Both projects, recognised as world-leading innovations, have secured multiple patents.     Among his innovations is the AI-powered, portable retinal fundus camera designed for self-testing screening for diabetic eye. This device enables efficient, comprehensive and accurate screening without requiring trained technicians. It automatically targets the subject’s eyes to capture fundus images within one minute without pupil-dilation or fluorescein injection. After this, the device transmits the image to an AI system, which assesses the optic nerve, fundus in both eyes, and detects signs of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy or cataract, without requiring interpretation from medical professionals. The research team has collaborated with OPTICAL 88 to install these devices in designated stores for public use.     For myopia management, Prof. He’s team developed a non-invasive repeated low-level red-light (RLRL) therapy to reduce the progression of childhood myopia. The team has recently improved the treatment by reducing light intensity, shortening treatment duration and optimising the illumination system. The therapy can halt myopia progression and even reduce the degree of myopia. Research showed that individuals with high myopia have their prescription reduced from 500 to 450 degrees after the treatment. PolyU-developed High-Definition Corneal Topographer to be showcased at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

Prof. KEE Chea-su, Associate Director of the Research Centre for SHARP Vision (RCSV), Head and Professor of the School of Optometry and Co-founder of GOOD Vision Technologies Co., Ltd, introduced the world’s first portable High-Definition Corneal Topographer “K-Shape” developed by his team in an interview with TVB. The innovation leverages AI-driven algorithms to accurately measure corneal power, provide early diagnosis of vision problems such as corneal astigmatism and corneal ectasia, and simplify the diagnosis process, enabling it to be completed in as little as one minute. RCSV partners with industry to explore Naked-Eye 3-Dimensional Vision Training for myopia control

The partnership between The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Holo See Medical Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd marks a significant step forward in the application of naked-eye 3D technology in the medical field, particularly in addressing visual health issues like myopia. This collaboration aims to leverage PolyU's leading research in optometry and myopia control, alongside Holo See's technological expertise, to develop innovative solutions for myopia prevention and treatment. An agreement signing cum inauguration ceremony for this collaboration was held on 9 December 2024. The agreement was signed by Prof. HE Mingguang, Director of Research Centre for SHARP Vision of PolyU, and Mr YANG Keqing, Director of Holo See Medical Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd, under the witness of PolyU representative Prof. CHEN Qingyan, Director of PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research, and Holo See representative, Ms HONG Wanjun, Managing Director of Holo See Medical Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. The ceremony was also attended by Mr LIU Xiao, Director of Doctorglasses China Co., Ltd and Mr ZHU Wui, Director of Shenzhen Jinghu Investment Consulting Co., Ltd. At the ceremony, Prof. Chen mentioned myopia is a widespread epidemic globally and has created a significant social burden. PolyU has continuously conducted research on myopia, and this collaboration with Holo See aims to further promote the university's research findings on myopia to the broader community. Prof. He also expressed enthusiasm for exploring the potential of naked-eye 3D stereoscopic vision training technology in myopia prevention and other visual health applications. Mr Yang acknowledged PolyU's top ranking in optometry and its significant contributions to myopia control, expressing optimism for a fruitful collaboration that could lead to groundbreaking advancements in the field. This partnership is poised to enhance the understanding and management of myopia, benefiting both the academic community and the general public.
