Every scientist must first forge a way through darkness and get over what seems to be impossible to pass, before they succeed in any innovative research.

Winner of The InnoStars Award 2021

RCSV congratulated Prof. To Chi-ho, Director of Research Centre for SHARP Vision; Chair Professor of Experimental Optometry; Henry G. Leong Professor in Elderly Vision Health; Head of School of Optometry, on receiving The Third InnoStars Award.

Presented by Our Hong Kong Foundation, Prof. To and the other eight outstanding individuals received the Award from HKSAR Chief Executive Mr John Lee on 29 July 2022.

The Award recognized Professor To Chi-ho’s enduring commitment to safeguarding people’s eye health through innovative vision science research and myopia control inventions. After 20 years of researching into myopia and overcoming countless difficulties, he invented the Defocus Incorporated Soft Contact (DISC) and co-developed the Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segment (DIMS) spectacle lens, which earned him international awards for effectively slowing down the progression rate of myopia among school children by 60%.

He firmly believes that, as long as his research produces new knowledge that improves the well-being of humankind, he will carry on regardless of opposing voices. Looking forward to the future, he will conduct further research to achieve his dream of curing myopia.

The InnoStars Award serves to inspire creativity and innovation, promote entrepreneurship, foster economic diversification, and showcase Hong Kong people’s innovative talent. The nine awardees were picked from a record high of over 120 nominations by a vetting committee and judging panel comprising 18 respected technology and business leaders for this year’s award.
