Summary

Topic

Optical vortices: science and applications

Abstracts

We initiate a plenary talk dedicated to commemorating the 30th anniversary of the birth of optical vortex (OV). It covers the fundamental theory, science, developments, and then to widespread applications of OVs. Firstly, we review the origin of the orbital angular momentum (OAM), and give two kinds of typical optical vortex which contain optical singularity: OAMs and cylindrical vector beams (CVBs). We further introduce the optical skyrmions which is a topological optical spin distribution due to the coupling between the spin and the orbital angular momentum of light. For the applications of the OVs, we mainly focus on the optical tweezers, optical imaging and sensing, optical communication.

Biography

Prof. Xiaocong YUAN has extensively been involved in nanophotonics since 1990, with specific emphasis on fundamental studies of singular optics as well as its significant engineering applications in optical microscopic sensing/imaging and optical interconnection. In the past 25 years, he created two research groups in Singapore and China, respectively, devoted his considerable efforts to the nano-scale optics and photonics concept, where fundamental studies have been employed for various important engineering applications. He is founding joint Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Photonics – a well-known decent top journal in optics and photonics.
