The PolyU Academy for Artificial Intelligence (PAAI) is pleased to announce the official establishment of its new research unit, the Research Institute for Federated Learning (RIFL), on 1 April 2026.
RIFL focuses on advancing cutting-edge developments in data privacy, security and collaborative intelligence. Led by Director Prof. Yang Qiang, Co-Director Prof. Liu Yang, and Associate Directors Prof. Qin Jing and Prof. Jiang Di, the team will focus on developing top-tier federated learning technologies. These technologies enable multiple parties to jointly train AI models without sharing sensitive data. The institute aims to address the growing needs for data governance and privacy protection, unlock the value of distributed data across organisations and industries, support the deployment of secure and trustworthy AI, promote cross-institutional cooperation, and lay the foundation for impactful and responsible AI innovation.
RIFL is committed to becoming a world-leading research institute for next-generation federated learning, promoting collaborative innovation, data democratisation and responsible AI for global benefit. It will lead cutting-edge federated learning research, drive industrial AI applications, and build a collaborative ecosystem connecting academia and industry.
