As a Higher Diploma student, you may either treat your Higher Diploma as a terminal certification or you may also articulate to a PolyU bachelor’s degree programme (For information about GUR of the articulation programmes at PolyU, please refer here).
In both cases, General University Requirements (GUR) is an integral part of your program of study to tap into your human potential in a broader sense.
The Higher Diploma General University Requirements consist of three components with 15-18 credits:

The purposes of the HDLCR are to help you develop language competence in support of academic and professional needs and to become an effective communicator.
All students are required to take LCR subjects in English and Chinese. The credit requirement of HDLCR subjects is specified in your Programme Requirement Document. Depending upon your level of language proficiency at entry, you may be required to take either degree-equivalent HDLCR subjects or LCR subjects at the bachelor’s degree level.

As a Higher Diploma student, you are required to take at least two CARs. In addition, you shall also fulfill the China Studies Requirement (CSR) embedded in some CAR subjects that helps you understand aspects of Chinese culture, history and contemporary developments.
The CAR subjects with the Writing and Reading Requirements will demand more effort and attention on the language aspect in addition to the subject content. To further know about these requirements, please visit English Language Centre and Chinese Language Centre respectively.
