We live in an era marked by rapid change. Globalisation, economic restructuring, and the rapid development of the mainland continue to reshape the economic and social landscape of Hong Kong. In this dynamic environment, it is clear that university students in Hong Kong need more than just academic knowledge—they must also cultivate essential 21st-century skills such as communication, leadership, and personal and social responsibility.

To support the development of students’ academic, personal, and interpersonal skills, PolyU introduced the four-year undergraduate curriculum in the 2012/13 academic year. This curriculum enhances the learning experience through a balanced integration of face-to-face and online teaching, interactive pedagogies, and the adoption of appropriate educational technologies. It maximises the use of contact hours, encourages both independent and collaborative learning, builds students’ confidence, improves communication skills, and provides opportunities for acquiring generic skills and adaptability for the future.

With the transformation from the Office of Undergraduate Studies (OUS) to the College of Undergraduate Studies (CUS) from 1 July 2025, PolyU has further strengthened its commitment to providing a holistic and forward-looking undergraduate education. Building on its expanded role, CUS now oversees not only the General University Requirements (GUR) but also the development and implementation of innovative academic programmes designed to meet the evolving needs of students and society.

Among these new initiatives is the launch of the "Bachelor’s Degree Scheme in Interdisciplinary Studies," which offers top-performing students a flexible and integrative curriculum that bridges multiple disciplines. This programme empowers students to address complex real-world challenges by drawing on knowledge and skills from diverse academic fields, fostering creativity, adaptability, and critical thinking.

In addition, the introduction of the "Minor Programme in Research and Innovation" provides undergraduates with valuable opportunities to develop research skills and cultivate an innovative mindset. Through this minor, students engage in hands-on research experiences, learn to apply innovative approaches to problem-solving, and are better prepared for future academic or professional pursuits.

These new academic offerings, alongside the existing GUR and other initiatives, reflect CUS’s dedication to enhancing the undergraduate learning experience. By embracing interdisciplinary education and promoting research and innovation, CUS aims to nurture well-rounded graduates who are equipped to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
