Summary

Topic
A Public Health Approach for Suicide Prevention

Abstract
The Hong Kong suicide rate has been experiencing much change in the last two decades. From 1997 to 2003, it increased to the historical high of 18.6 per 100,000. Contributing to this has been the new emerging method of charcoal burning, which has become the third most common method of suicide in Hong Kong.  The suicide rate has reduced significantly since then to an estimated 12.0 in 2022. Across the period, we have witnessed the concerted effort in the community to help reduce the suicide rate. I this talk, we would like to propose a public health approach for suicide prevention which is  sustainable and effective. It involves an effective surveillance and monitoring system and community based suicide prevention effort.
