Student Message

Studying at the Department of Land Surveying and Geospatial Science (LSGS) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has been one of the most rewarding journeys of my life. During my studies, I have gained extensive experience regarding land surveying, GIS, and urban informatics through many laboratory classes and survey camps, making us equipped with adequate professional knowledge to adapt to the pace of our ever-changing society. This helped develop my technical skills, analytical thinking ability, and cooperation among peers.

Apart from these, I was able to participate in study tours to Japan and Sweden respectively, providing me an insight into the applications of spatial data to solve urban and environmental problems, including underground utilities management in the cities. Each environment offers unique knowledge.

Last but not least, I have made lasting friendships as well as developed the confidence to enter this fast-growing profession. As a graduate from LSGS, I gained professional knowledge and qualifications as well as being encouraged to work for the sustainable development of our society.

I highly encourage prospective students passionate about spatial data and technology to join LSGS—it will transform your future.

Studying in the Land Surveying and Geospatial Science (LSGS) programme at PolyU has given me a wealth of career and academic opportunities. Trading a semester at PolyU for a semester at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden was likely the most notable opportunity I had. The KTH has a stellar academic reputation and I was able to take graduate level coursework on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and on Spatial Analysis & Geoinformatics. This opportunity expanded my mastery of modern surveying tools as well as my ability to model different phenomena and analyze data. It also expanded my ability to think critically about different frameworks and methodological approaches and consider how they might apply in the context of my country.

Not only did the LSGS offer great exchange opportunities to Europe, but they also provided subsidized International Study electives that opened doors to land surveying work abroad. On a trip to Japan, I saw how surveying and GIS helped with both the preservation of cultural heritage at the Osaka Museum of History and the management of temple-goers at Kiyomizu-dera.

There was an excellent connection with industry that came with this bachelor programme. During my Work Integrated Education (WIE) placement with the Civil Engineering and Development Department, I was able to survey using UAVs, participate in hydrographic surveys, and do 3D surveying as well as laser scanning. Because of these experiences I was able to see the innovative aspects of LSGS and the multitude of career opportunities that it offers.

With the combination of advanced surveying skills, a differentiated international perspective, and the confidence to tackle challenges, this programme prepares you for the ever-changing surveying and geo-informatics industry. I endorse this programme to any future students.
