PolyU TechManag 297x420mmh 2018 Page 1As the management of technology education is an important preparation for innovation and growth, the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering will offer a flexible, unique and practical Programme – Master of Science in Technology Management starting September 2004.

Under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) between Hong Kong and Mainland China, the Hong Kong SAR is becoming a springboard for many companies, both local and overseas to invest in high value, high technology products and services to exploit new business opportunities.

As such, these companies will need highly skilled people who can provide solutions to multi-facet problems. Candidates who take up the Master of Science in Technology Management Programme will be well prepared for such challenges

Programme Aims and Characteristics

Programme Aims

The proposed programme aims at providing knowledge and expertise in technology management to managers and engineers with technology related responsibilities. In particular, the programme will enable you to:

  • Develop your competence in understanding innovation cycles and ultimately turn innovations into commercial successes;
  • Understand the financial and strategic framework for the development, acquisition and adoption of technology in an organization;
  • Keep abreast of the technological development in your chosen field of interest such as manufacturing, design, and logistics.


The programme is suitable for executives, managers or engineers in all sorts of sector including manufacturing, service, public utilities and financial companies with the responsibilities to acquire, audit, manage, transfer, and finance technology. Apart from compulsory and core subjects, you are able to select subjects from a wide range of subjects offered within the Engineering Postgraduate Scheme to suit your own career and specialism.

The teaching approach of the programme includes lectures, seminars, workshops and field trips outside Hong Kong.
The compulsory and some core subjects are offered on Saturdays and Sundays to minimize disturbances on your daily work.

You must satisfy the following specific requirements of this programme:

  • A Bachelor's degree with Honours in engineering, business or science, or a professional qualification, or the equivalent.

Consideration will also be given to candidates without Honours degrees, but who have other relevant qualifications that are supplemented by appropriate work experience.


If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Please refer to the "Admission Requirements" section for details.


Individual cases will be considered on their own merit. Applicants may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate their language proficiency.

Programme Structure and Information

Programme Structure

To be eligible for the award of the Master of Science in Technology Management, students shall satisfy either of the following requirements:

1. SEVEN taught subjects, including THREE Compulsory, at least TWO Core, and at most TWO Elective subjects, and a Dissertation


2. TEN taught subjects, including THREE Compulsory, at least THREE Core which includes the "Field Study", and at most FOUR elective subjects


To be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Technology Management, students shall complete SIX taught subjects, including THREE Compulsory, at least ONE Core, and at most TWO Elective subjects.


Each taught subject carries 3 credits and the Dissertation carries 9 credits. To obtain the Masters degree, students must acquire a minimum of 30 credits.

The Continuing Education Fund (CEF) subsidizes adults with learning aspirations to pursue continuing education and training courses. Eligible applicants will be reimbursed 80% of their fees, subject to a maximum sum of HK$10,000, on successful completion of a reimbursable course or module(s) forming part of the course.
