Dr Ada Lo has been involved as a trainer for the East Asian Games Volunteer Training since December 2008. The training is organised by the 2009 East Asian Games (Hong Kong) Limited and co-organised by the Agency for Volunteer Service, and has recruited around 5,000 volunteers to provide reception, technical and logistical assistance for the organisation and staging of the Games.


 
  

Dr Basak Denizci attended the 4th International Conference on Services Management hosted by Oxford Brookes University Business School in the UK on 8-9 May. Her paper, "A Multicultural View of Disney – McDonald's Alliance", collaboratively written with Dr Asli Tasci, was selected as one of the best papers to be included in the special edition of the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management on the internationalisation of hospitality firms. In addition, Dr Denizci was invited by the Hong Kong Hotel Controllers Association to conduct Revenue Management workshops on 18 and 25 June.

  

Dr Thomas Bauer made a presentation on "Sustainable Tourism Management at Heritage Sites" at the 4th Silk Road Mayors' Forum in Pyeongtaek, Republic of South Korea. During a one-week stay in June he assisted the Ministry of Tourism of Timor Leste with tourism planning in the Lautem District. This was a joint initiative of the SHTM, APETIT and PATA.



  
Dr Prakash Chathoth spoke at the annual Global Hotel Cultural Forum, which was held in Shenzhen, China, from 12 to 14 May. The topic of his presentation was "Managing Competencies in Asian Hotels: A Knowledge-Based Approach".



  
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the SHTM and the South China University of Technology on 25 May. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Professor Kaye Chon of the SHTM and Prof Ming Qi of the South China University of Technology to foster closer co-operation.

  

Professor Anna S. Mattilla, Marriott Professor of Lodging Management, Pennsylvania State University, offered an industry seminar at PolyU on 26 May. Professor Mattilla's topic for the seminar was "From Customer Dissatisfaction to Service Recovery: Issues and Challenges".



  
Mr Paul Penfold presented his paper entitled "Tourism Education in Virtual Worlds-Future or Fantasy?" at the UNWTO Ulysses Conference in Madrid, Spain on 27-28 May.

 
  

A group of SHTM staff and students attended the APacCHIRE Annual Conference held in Singapore on 28-30 May, and they included: Professor Kaye Chon, Dr David Jones, Dr Hanqin Zhang Qiu, Dr Norman Au, Dr Wilco Chan, Dr Andy Lee, Dr, Mimi Li, Dr Barry Mak, Dr Henry Tsai, Ms Nicole Wong and Mr Erdogan Ekiz. Professor Kaye Chon was invited as one of the academic speakers for the panel session on "Hospitality and Tourism Education: Global Trends and
Developments".



  

Professor Kaye Chon presented at a seminar at the MCI Management Centre in Innsbruck, Austria on 2 June. His presentation topic was the "Hotel and Tourism Industry in Asia".

 
   

Professor Haiyan Song spent three weeks at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) as part of the SHTM Faculty Attachment programme from mid-May to early June. He met heads of different departments within the UNWTO and discussed possibilities for collaboration between the UNWTO and the SHTM. Professor Song gave a seminar to UNWTO officials on the "Financial Crisis and its Impact on Tourism in Asia".


   
Professor Haiyan Song presented a paper at the 11th Biennial Conference of the International Academy for the Studies of Tourism held on 6-13 June in Marlloca, Spain. The title of the presentation was "Tourism Supply Chain Forecasting: A Collaborative Approach".

 
   

The 5th Pan-Pearl River Delta Regional Cooperation and Development Forum and Trade Fair was held in Nanning, Guangxi on 9-10 June. Dr Tony Tse represented SHTM in signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Guangxi University's Business School pledging collaboration in joint research and executive education.



    
Dr Tony Tse gave a talk at the Work-integrated Education Seminar Series organised by PolyU's Education Development Centre on 9 June. His topic was "Administering WIE and Working with Industry Partners". In addition, Dr Tse visited Shangdong College of Tourism and Hospitality on 23-24 June and gave a presentation to 200 students on School of Hotel and Tourism Management.
