Lorenzo BIASIOLO's Story

My name is Lorenzo Biasiolo. I am an Italian PhD student in the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). My research focuses on Biometrics and Deep Learning, under the supervision of Professor Ajay Kumar. I am fully dedicated to research and academic development.

Since childhood, my dream has been to pursue a career in academic research. A quotation by Pablo Picasso has always guided me:
“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it.”
For me, the PhD journey is not only an opportunity to cultivate my abilities, but also a responsibility to place them at the service of knowledge and society.

Although I am at an early stage of my research journey, my first year has been rich in learning opportunities. I have participated in seminars and workshops that broadened my scientific perspective, built a solid research foundation, and obtained my first encouraging results. PolyU also offers valuable networking opportunities within a supportive and international academic community.

The University has supported my growth both academically and personally. Through academic, sports, and social activities, I have met inspiring people and developed meaningful connections.

My experience with supervision and mentorship has been extremely positive. Professor Ajay Kumar has been consistently supportive and attentive. While I am working toward becoming more independent, his guidance is fundamental in shaping my research toward meaningful and impactful outcomes.

This doctoral programme has strengthened my critical thinking, resilience, and independence, while fostering responsibility and intellectual curiosity. To prospective students, I would encourage you to embrace curiosity, perseverance, and openness to collaboration. A PhD at PolyU is demanding yet highly rewarding journey, and success lies in maintaining passion for research while actively engaging with the academic community.
