KWOK Ngok Sang's Story
Research
KWOK Ngok Sang
PhD student
Department of Applied Mathematics
I hold both a Bachelor’s degree and an MPhil from PolyU, and I am now a PhD student. My research focuses on statistics, with a particular interest in survival analysis, missing data analysis, and high-dimensional statistics.
Choosing to pursue my doctoral studies at PolyU was a natural decision. Having already studied here, I knew that PolyU offers the resources and support I need to carry out high-quality research. Specifically, I have access to high-quality teaching, a wide range of academic journals and books, and excellent computing facilities. I also benefit greatly from the guidance of my supervisor and our research group, where I can discuss new ideas, receive feedback, and learn from others.
Research has been a challenging yet rewarding journey for me. There have been tough moments when my ideas failed or my work received critical comments. At the same time, there have been many memorable experiences: the excitement of making a breakthrough on a difficult problem, and the sense of achievement when submitting my first paper to a journal. These ups and downs have helped me grow intellectually and personally.
PolyU has provided an environment where I can concentrate on my research, develop my skills, and gradually build confidence as an independent researcher.
For prospective students, my advice is to find a topic you truly love and be ready for challenges. As Steve Jobs once said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”. PolyU is a very good place to pursue your PhD.
